  • One of the big things that is ending racism in the US, is that the people who were alive before ~1980 are dying...

There are still other things that need to be done to end racism, but that is (still) probably the most significant.

    • That sounds just like all the other racists. Well blacks are generally lazy. Geeze.

And I was alive for over 30 years by 1980.

      • I was born in 1970 and my 17 year old thinks that certain opinions I have are racist. I do recognize that he's probably right for his time because my actions/ideals are based on my experiences. For my time, I'm not racist at all. So I don't blame older people for their racism. I forgive it because I understand they are a product of their times. A lot of people who wanted the slaves to be free still did not think that blacks were equal to whites just that enslaving them was wrong. God bless their progressiveness. But on a personal and professional level I do not deal with people who look at me and the best they can come up with is ******.

          • So thinking Chinese people are generally more capable of preparing Chinese food is racist but thinking old people are generally racist isn't prejudiced.

Is it still racist if it's true?

                • What is racist is assuming that some individual fits your stereotype even if the stereotype is broadly accurate.

                  • Generalized assumptions are made every day in every situation. Why is race different?

Is it sexist to assume a female firefighter cannot carry the same weight as a male firefighter?

                    • Actually I think racism is passed from generation to generation unless a constant effort is done.

My father in law is one of the most racist people I've ever met. He was a city bigwig in Chicago so in public he was fine, but in private it was obvious. Both of his sons demonstrate some of those traits in private. Maybe not as bad but maybe they just better at hiding them.

On the other Hand growing up, I didn't consider my father a racists on any matters. He taught us to judge each man separately. That had a great influence on my development. While I'm not perfect, I don't consider myself a racist. And hopefully that's what I passed on to my daughter. But now that my father is older and I get to spend more time with him, I've heard a few comments that I would consider borderline. It leads me to believe that he had to do some effort to appear as non-racist as he did when we were younger. Of course this may all be filtered by rose colored glasses since I've always idolized my father.

Actually I know a female firefighter in Arizona that could carry more weight then her male counterparts. So I assume she could kick you ass.
But yes I agree that we use generalization every day, but when you associate negative generalizations about race, it becomes racism.

So racism is only racism when it's a negative connotation?

I'm having a feeling people are confusing racism with political correctness.

To me, racism is saying all [race] are [blah] and being closed-minded to exceptions. It need not be positive or negative.

I don't consider generalizations to be racist unless you never give people the opportunity to demonstrate otherwise. Ditto sexism. It's sexist to say "I will not hire female firefighters because they cannot carry as much weight", it's not sexist to say "Females tend not to be as strong as male firefighters and may have a tougher time meeting the sex-agnostic physical requirements". Not being able to carry as much weight is a negative generalization, so that makes it sexist?
