I have less than half my hearing.

Those 'high pitched' sounds are pretty much everything over 1000 decibels. Speech is centered at 1000 decibels, so most stuff I can't hear at all, and what I can hear are parts of what people say to me.

My impairment is classified as the most severe grade.

The average reading level for people with my impairment is around grade 3 which has been consistant for pretty much since they started keeping records. The system is broken and nobody cares.

So yeah, gay people have it tough in the world. My heart bleeds for them.

Actually advertisers pay for it. That was a godsend, but that didn't come around until just recently. I didn't grow up with it and it wasn't widely available for a long time. TV was mostly irrelevent to me.

The problem is it's a difference in scale. Gay teens kill themselves 3-6x as often as the other "lots of people" who get bullied.

When I came in, (of course, I didn't know it at the time), but they had never dealt with a deaf kid in the public school system before. Never had been done. There were schools for the deaf in Vancouver, but not up where we were. There were special ed classes but nothing for deaf kids specifically.

Most of my life has been a series of doing things because nobody had done them before. After I'd been in the system for awhile, they wanted to skip me up a grade to see how I'd do. So no lie either way.

I was lucky and have been very lucky so far to get as far as I have. Most deaf people aren't so lucky, and that's a problem. If gay people were kicked out of schools, etc, don't you think you'd have cause to be upset? If a study came out and said that gay people weren't being taught to read because they are gay, do you think you'd have to be upset? Hell yes.

But we don't see either of them. Gay people are not a forgotten minority, they ***** more than everyone else combined.

Speech and hearing are related. Same with reading. If you can't hear well, you won't read well, because you won't be reading at all. You'll just be memorizing words not sounds.

Because there's hardly any literature out there at all. I was the focus of a study when I went to university that was assessing university education for deaf and hard of hearing people. Why? Because I was one of maybe 3 undergrads while I attended there at UBC.
