And the proper accents in the US and UK are not even wildly different...although some Scottish accents are starting to get a bit tough.

In some forums they do make fun of latin american spanish dialects, but it is rather silly, since nowadays spanish is important mainly because of latin america, and also because latin america has produced more great writers than Spain since the XIX century.

Nowadays Portuguese is the language of Brazil, studying Portuguese from Portugal is almost nonesensical. 200 million people new big power beats 10 million people irrelevant euro country. And Portuguese from Brazil and Portuguese from Portugal are truly quite different.

You're boring me with your "DURR what does English have to do with London?" comments.

So it's just like how the USA has been far more significant and important than Britain since after WW2 but the British still have arrogance...

and even idiots like gribbler seem to think the English hold some sort of monopoly on the language!

              Thank you, Barnabas

You're the arrogant one, Speer. Fanatically parochial, small-minded and incapable of recognising or having any respect for any worldview outside your own city, let alone your own country.

Help yourself to our language. It's still our language.

It's not cockney. Not at all.

                          • Why am I not surprised Albie doesn't understand that Cockney is a regional accent and not a standard British accent (not there is a standard British accent any more then there is a standard American accent).

you're an idiot and you know nothing. what barnabas is saying doesn't support your position.

portuguese from portugal and protuguese from brasil are different, far more so than english and american english. i find it very hard to understand someone from portugal (open your mouth, pronounce the whole word!). quite a lot of vocabulary is different. more importantly, there are grammatical differences (on brasil tu is rarely used, vos never, reflexive verbs are different, the way pronouns and verbs are combined is different etc.). the variations between english in america, australia, canada etc. are very minor in comparison.
