And the proper accents in the US and UK are not even wildly different...although some Scottish accents are starting to get a bit tough.

portuguese from portugal and protuguese from brasil are different, far more so than english and american english. i find it very hard to understand someone from portugal (open your mouth, pronounce the whole word!). quite a lot of vocabulary is different. more importantly, there are grammatical differences (on brasil tu is rarely used, vos never, reflexive verbs are different, the way pronouns and verbs are combined is different etc.). the variations between english in america, australia, canada etc. are very minor in comparison."The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.
