  • Have you ever been substantively wrong online?

It seems to me that a prerequisite for "debating" anything is being capable of being wrong, so I was curious to know how many posters have satisfied the prerequisite.

I have in the past admitted to be wrong or been in error regarding:
    1. underestimating the value of the southern states' slaves at the time of the Civil War by about two orders of magnitude
    2. being a college libertarian (tandeetaylor cured me of this ailment)
    3. believing that embryos/fetuses were not distinct organisms
    4. debating the existence of God (strike 1), and using the invisible pink unicorn argument (strike 2) - it turns out that it's pointless to debate the existence of God, and that invisible pink unicorns really do exist
    5. stating that Amazon.com would die along with the other .coms when the bubble burst (fortunately I didn't have any money to invest at the time)

Well, once upon a time I was in favor of the Afghanistan intervention.

I was a college high school libertarian too sort of but I don't think I ever vomited up any of that nonsense on this esteemed forum so there's no evidence and I'll deny it till the day I die. No one person cured me of that particular illness. I think I just naturally grew out of it.

          Let's see.

          1) believing that Microsoft would become an Orwellian transnational monitoring entity
          2) predicting a week before the last election that Canada could only ever give a majority to a red tory
          3) generally being a college socialist
          4) grossly overestimating the real cost of the bailout

supporting the war in afghanistan, events cured me of that. some tabloidy right wing stuff several years ago, although a lot of that was to wind up laz & molly bloom, i did believe a fair bit of it myself.

i'm sure there's lots of other things, but they haven't lived as long in the memory.

I originally wasn't going to reply about this, but after seeing what Loinburger posted:

                  1. I was wrong about McCain. What a worthless sack of garbage. I thought there was no way he would lose to Obama.
                  2. I was wrong about Sola Scriptura. The bible doesn't teach it and nobody believed in it until Luther.
                  3. I was wrong about Grandpa Troll. He's a bigger man than I am and kudos to him for it.
                  4. I was wrong about JRabbit for the same reasons.
                  5. I was wrong about Agathon's advice to me. If I had followed his advice I'd be much happier for it.

Most of the truly egregious stuff I worked out before ever getting the chance to post online. The rest I haven't yet decided is egregious enough to change it.

                              1. I was initially surprised and disappointed that Bush was elected, but the forums thought me that he was really great comparing to the state of most American voter minds.

                              2. I thought that Welsh were not shagging sheep, and that was only a rude English inferiority complex joke, but I know better now, I did not even figure that one out while I was living there (in UK).

                              3. There are no fries like freedom fries, and that all which has word freedom in it, is better... I did not realise this earlier

                              4. That Canada is better than US in virtually every way and that the Americans are very jealous of their northern neighbours success.

                              5. That Apple is more evil than Microsoft

and I could go on like that... I learned a lot online, and am still learning

also # 1001. I never posted such a value added tread as this one
