You don't think that Al-Qaeda wants to spread Islam throughout the world? That's the whole ****ing mission of Islam. Just as Christians are called upon to spread the Word to every corner of the globe. It just so happens that most missionaries (Christian, Muslim or whatever) spread their faith with free food, medical care and education, while Al-Qaeda chooses to kill people.
Don't forget that Islam doesn't distinguish between secular and religious authorities. Christianity was tempered by Constantine and scriptures into respecting worldly authorities. Mohammed and his successors were both secular and religious authorities. So while Christianity can coexist with democracy as well as fascism, originalist Islam is stuck in a medieval political mindset.

I believe that while this does reflect the manifesto of AQ, that AQ's activities are more political than religious. I think they could give a crap about Islam if it wasn't such a useful tool to motivate the masses. Just as many of the "religious" wars of the Christian Middle Ages were much more about power, control and money...
"I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration." - Hillary Clinton, 2003
Have to agree there with Plato. They make the proper noise when it's convenient. But it probably plays a real minor role.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

While this is true the people who use religious excuses tend to actually believe them. So the crusaders really did believe in the Jesus stuff, for example.
Religious excuses motivate the hoi polloi, while the guys in charge are a bunch of secular cynics? Sounds right.
Yep. Just like the Saudi royal women geting on an airplane in Islamic dress in Riyadh and gettig off in New York dressed in mini skirts.

Well considering people like bin Laden think the Saudi king should be overthrown for being too liberal, it's hard to imagine them liking us when you consider our culture.
The difference is that bin Laden was from SA and Muslim extremists view SA and other such countries as part of the Muslim world. They don't really care how liberal the U.S. is. As bin Laden himself noted, if they were hating countries because of how liberal and free they were, they would have targeted Sweden on 9/11.
Yeah, but Sweden only has two buildings over 400 feet. New York was more of a "can't miss" opportunity for their Florida Community College Pilots licenses.

Considering AQ's recruitment material makes no reference to spreading Islam to the world, but rather focuses on the perceived evils of the U.S. involvement in traditionally Arab and Muslim countries, I find the assertion that their ultimate goal is world conquest to be without basis.

That's not correct IMO. Mohammed and a few of his successors exerted both secular and religious authority but for the most part they've been seperate. In fact, there is no central religious 'authority'.
