    Statements like this:
" the vengeance is duly had with all the relentlessness of our Roman forebearers"

    Make no sense.

The Romans did not take a decade to get Hannibal, as you claimed. For one, Hannibal committed suicide. The Romans never got him. For two, the Battle of Zama was in 202 BC. Hannibal committed suicide in 183-182 BC. Where was Hannibal those 19-20 years? It sure wasn't in hiding and it sure wasn't with the Romans perpetually hounding him, since Hannibal became suffete of Carthage, after all, and was doing quite well as a public figure, both in Carthage and throughout the Near East.

And Rome in 182 BC was hardly a superpower.

Plus, Osama is one of them arabs. I don't think Hannibal was. Hannibal used elephants, while Osama had people take over planes with box cutters. What a stupid comparison

Why do you even bother posting? What is your statement even supposed to mean?

Great! Will you guys now be leaving Afganistan? Or does that clash with your general foreign policy of bombing and shooting at brown people until they start to... I guess vote or something?

Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

Well obviously it's stupid to draw comparisons between powerful countries chasing after boogeymen if the circumstances weren't identical. So I pointed out a difference between Osama and Hannibal to help demonstrate your point.

Regardless, Rome immediately after Zama was hardly a power. By Hannibal's death 20 years later, they had a few military victories over the Macedonians and Seleucids under their belts and had finally subjugated the Gauls of Italy, but real superpower status wouldn't be until the First Triumvirate.

That Hannibal was elected suffete of Carthage and enjoyed the patronage of kings throughout the Near East says a lot about Roman efforts and ability to capture their boogeyman.

Oh they weren't a power, they were just doing successful overseas campaigns and other stuff that powers like to do.

Hahaha reminds me of how Osama lived just 800 feet from Pakistani police.

Where did you get that short video clip, Lonestar? I want to get the code so I can share it on Facebook.

Hey, I have an idea! Let's have the ancient history discussion in a different thread!

I wonder how much this had to do with the CIA-Pentagon shuffle this week.

This thread is so sad that Albie is the ****ing voice of reason. Time to burn it down and move over to SB's thread...

Agreed. Prior to the historical digression, Albie was right on: this changes nothing. We're no more or less safe than we were last week. We will still be involved in three wars; we will still have $4 gas; we will still have a **** economy. This is an extremely hollow victory, but America being America, most of the country only cares about appearance.

And you think that's comparable to a guy being the military advisor to King Antiochus III of the Seleucid Empire?

Rome at the conclusion of the Second Punic War was not a 'superpower' by any stretch of the imagination. That would develop over the next several decades with the Servile Wars, Social Wars, and various civil wars inter-mixed in.
