I agree with Elok that Americans and Saudi Arabians are both sadly backwards with ****ed up political spectrums.

It leans slightly left by American standards. Compare it to other U.S. papers and you'll see them that way. Now, they're a fairly responsible newspaper, and they make a genuine effort to be fair, but by American standards there's a subtle skew towards liberal in most stories, and in the matter of which stories they choose to cover. I think they try to offset it by letting George Will babble about rubbish without hindrance. Most of the time he's simply boring, but every now and then he writes something so out of touch it's hysterical. Like, a few years back, he wrote an article about how wearing jeans, even outside of work, is a deplorable fashion that makes people look slovenly--young people today just don't understand how they send messages with their appearance. In the same column, he implied that adults who play video games should not be allowed to vote.Originally posted by Asher View PostI don't see how anyone could make an argument that WaPo today leans at all to the left. At best, it's centrist. It may have a few left-wingers on it in op-eds, but that doesn't really matter.
If you want to see a left-leaning paper, check out http://www.thestar.ca
BTW, I mean the aggregate of the opinions of the authors, not the populace.
But I digress. The WaPo was supportive of gay rights before it had the popular support it has today. Global warming skeptics don't get a lot of mention, pro-lifers get token treatment, Republican congresscritters get hammered harder than Dems. And the big editorials, the ones approved by the majority of the editorial board, are almost invariably left-wing.

Hilarious considering all you've been able to do is say "BUT THE CONSTITUTION" in the context of Canadian politics and regulations.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostI'd advise just ignoring Asher in this discussion since it seems the only thing he's able to contribute is that Canada is more liberal than the US."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. No, of course he can't, but when an American says "paper X is liberal," and a Canadian replies, "nuh-uh, it's centrist or conservative," apparently judging by his own standards--well, that's not really what was meant, was it?Originally posted by Wezil View PostBut how can a non-American judge from an American POV? Oh, jesus ****ing Christ HC.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostIt's a liberal newspaper in what may be the most liberal city in the entire country.
Have you ever been to San Francisco? Hello?
Yes, I can. It's you *******s that keep fixating on the classification of the paper. You brought it up as if it helped your point somehow, Alby kept quoting wikipedia entries that didn't really help him, and Elok is just providing his opinions on it. There's nothing pedantic about it on my behalf. Do you know the definition of the word? It's liberal. Asher, you can never accuse Kuciwalker of being pedantic again."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Portland sounds substantially more liberal than DC to me. Or San Francisco. I mean, the city has enough conservatives to keep the Washington Times in business somehow, and that's owned by the bloody Moonies.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostIt's a liberal newspaper in what may be the most liberal city in the entire country. Some people are bright enough to understand that the context of this thread is Canadian politics and regulations. Further, the poster making the comment is Canadian.Originally posted by Elok View PostNo, of course he can't, but when an American says "paper X is liberal," and a Canadian replies, "nuh-uh, it's centrist or conservative," apparently judging by his own standards--well, that's not really what was meant, was it?
Americans need to get the **** over themselves. The majority of the modern world shares a political spectrum that is largely the same, and the US is way offset from it.
You guys aren't special enough to get your own spectrum, use the same one as everyone else and admit democrats are centre-right and Republicans are largely right wing whackjobs."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Good luck with that. We cannot reopen the Constitution without dealing with "Quebec issues".
I'd wager our Constitution will not be amended again for a very long time.
I get a good chuckle out of people who think that abolishing the monarchy or the Senate are ever going to happen. They never mention that all ten provinces would have to agree along with both houses of Parliament.(\__/)

So he should judge it on what the American says it is?Originally posted by Elok View PostNo, of course he can't, but when an American says "paper X is liberal," and a Canadian replies, "nuh-uh, it's centrist or conservative," apparently judging by his own standards--well, that's not really what was meant, was it?
He can offer you nothing other than a Cdn POV.
A paper is judged by the standards of its own country, or should be.

Not to mention the referendum, which although is not technically required, will be demanded in these post-Charlottetown days.Originally posted by notyoueither View PostI get a good chuckle out of people who think that abolishing the monarchy or the Senate are ever going to happen. Actually it's a money-loser for the moonies. The moonies keep it around to have a voice in washington. Also, I know some ex-moonies and all I can say about the Unification Church is that they make the scientologists look as sweet and innocent as the Girl Scouts.Originally posted by Elok View PostPortland sounds substantially more liberal than DC to me. @Asher
Asher, you don't even debate anymore. You just turn your long-since discredited talking points into ad hominem snipes and refuse to acknowledge the slightest dissent in your most outrageous positions. Then you sprinkle your garbage with a healthy dose of anti-American rhetoric: "America is hopeless, America is ignorant, America is doomed, America is evil"--and any other phrases that match this particular pattern of offensive nonsense. Sometimes you mock language use just to throw in another trite insult instead of actually opening your mind to other people's opinions. Quite frankly, your contributions to most recent discussions have been worthless. It doesn't even matter what the topic is about. It doesn't matter if the topic is butter versus margarine. The only thing you ever do is gambit with an overbroad, sweeping statement with some incendiary component and once someone decides to refute it you immediately fall into this pattern of antagonistic empty rhetoric.
It's not worth debating with you anymore because you don't debate. It's like talking to a brick wall, except the brick wall occasionally calls you names and makes predictable insults. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?
