This is irrelevant bollocks, and slightly hysterical too. There was no 'propaganda machine' as such. You make it sound like the police were ramping up public support for bombing and invading a foreign country. There was an incompetent and panic-fuelled mistake, leading to the tragic death of an innocent man, followed by a certain amount of bull**** and spin from the authorities.
The fact that the authorities failed to deal with a fatally-bungled security operation properly bears no resemblance whatsoever to your straw-man scenario of one civilian shooting another, while claiming he thought the victim was a terrorist. Law enforcement and security is the job of the police. If they are incompetent, and are subsequently protected by the state, then this is indeed a problem, but it has nothing to do with the issue of gun control as being discussed in this thread.
In fact your post was nothing but nationalistic flag waving in response to a few British posters observing that we have very few shootings in our country, and that we have very few guns.
I personally have not advocated a position wrt US gun control not least because I recognise that there is an entirely different historical and cultural context.

Burglars, for the most part, are docile criminals. They generally strike when the home or business is uninhabited.
Home invasion isn't the same. These people are violent, and do it for the violence more than the ransacking.
In 2008, in addition to fatalities, 30,984 African-Americans were treated for firearm injuries in emergency rooms, followed with 19,338 Whites, and 16,903 Hispanics
In 2007, 84 percent of African-American gun deaths were from homicide
In 2007, 68 percent of Hispanic-American gun deaths were from homicide
In 2007, African-Americans represented 13 percent of the population yet accounted for 49 percent of all homicide victims
In 2007, 82 percent of African-American homicide victims were killed with guns
In 2007, 80 percent of gun deaths among Whites were from suicide
In 2007, 56 percent of American-Indian/Alaska Native firearm deaths were from suicide
Rural counties have more gun suicides; urban areas have more gun homicides.
n 2007, the rate of unintentional shooting death was low in the U.S. for all race and ethnic groups
SOLUTION: Without stronger, sensible gun laws, thousands upon thousands of people will continue to die and be injured needlessly each year.

They tackled him, and while he was pinned, they fired seven shots into his head. You're okay with this? Maybe because you were lied to and convinced that the police were "just doing their best."
In the aftermath of the shooting MPS officials "made or concurred with inaccurate public statements concerning the circumstances of the death. The alleged inaccurate information included statements that Mr de Menezes had been wearing clothing and behaving in a manner which aroused suspicions." Here's the Stockwell 2 report, starting at page 56 you'll see that the police gradually get caught in their lies and are forced to backtrack.
You haven't been reading what Cort Haus said. He didn't defend the police, he said it was outside the remit of this debate. Which I agree with. This was a massive scandal, both the shooting and the attempted cover up which many of us are still angry about. To try and portray it as something which, when we heard about it on the news, we all politely celebrated, waved our Union Jacks and started singing God Saves the Queen shows you have absolutely no idea how things work in the UK.
As an aside, I wonder how many innocent unarmed people are shot by the police in a year in the US? And of those I wonder how many police are prosecuted for their actions. I would bet there are more shootings, and the police almost always get away with it.

Golden rule.
Don't fukc with the cops they won't fukc with you.
In the John Menzies case, he wasn't ****ing with anyone, just a case of mistaken identity after a massive series of cockups (including someone leaving surveillance post to go for a piss)
Officer Johannes Mehserle and another officer were restraining Grant, who was prostrate and allegedly resisting arrest.[4][5][6] Officer Mehserle stood, drew his gun and shot Grant once in the back.
...
The trial began on June 10, 2010. Michael Rains, Mehserle's criminal defense attorney, has claimed Mehserle intended to fire his Taser, but mistakenly shot Grant with a pistol when he thought Grant was reaching for a gun.
Steven Eugene Washington, 27, didn't respond to commands and seemed to reach for a weapon, officers say. Relatives say he had learning disabilities and was generally afraid of strangers.
That'll teach him to **** with the police!
I didn't look past the first page of Google search results.

Grant served two state prison terms for various felonies including a conviction for drug dealing.[41] In 2007, San Leandro police stunned him with a Taser to subdue him after a traffic stop, in which he threw the pistol into the air and ran.[11] He was sentenced to 16 months in state prison.
So he deserves to be shot in the back, and killed, when he's already being restrained?
What about the second guy? He had learning difficulties, was autistic and scared of strangers, he could easily have been a Poly poster!

Radly Balko (theagitator.com) is a good source for such things. Happens all the time. SWAT teams create quite a bit of "collateral damage."
[note: Balko, being a libertarian and a pretty hard line one at that, is AFAIK totally against any gun control]

If you can't trust the police, the solution isn't to give them massive firearms while you arm up with pistols. All that leads to is a higher firearm homicide rate.
