What kind of twisted logic convinced you that killing Pashtuns advances the interests of the United States, but getting a private sector job does not?

      • Who was it that said industry and private enterprise is the foundation of America? Somebody, I don't remember. Anyway, he was right.

        • It sounds to be me like he could do with a mentor - someone who will look out for him and put him forward for roles and advise him on the way things are done. But first he needs to get a job where he can prove himself to said person. Even if it is literally or metaphorically just flipping burgers.

          • Seriously, go food service or retail. It will suck, very much, but every day you go unemployed will make your resume increasingly poisonous, and you've already been unemployed for the better part of a year, no? I wish I'd had the sense to take a crap filler job right out of college instead of fighting for a real job with my worthless major, clumsy people skills and total lack of formal work experience. I'd probably be in much better shape now if I had. Now, if only I had some idea what I wanted to do with my life...every kind of work sounds terrible.

            • He was already getting supervisory and managerial roles in fast food joints and apparently getting good results, those companies (at least in the UK) are very good at promoting internal talent tending to like people who understand their 'values' and make them money. And they are big well run companies with long ladders to climb. Being a burger flipper might suck but being the area manager for 30 burger joints, or working in management at head office in buying or logistics or something would get you a very decent remuneration and great practical experience.

                • At the very least you'd get the opportunity to move from Philly to somewhere with a stronger job market.

                      • Hey Albie, there is an element of truth in here. Sod this military business. There are plenty of brainless buzzcuts who can be expended on the battlefield...if you are as smart as you say you are then it would be a waste of brains...brains that would be a shame to see splattered all over Helmand province.

So quit the silly idea and get looking for a proper job. If you have supervisory experience and a background in finance, especially if both acedemic and practical work experience you should be in a very, very commanding position.

It's your choice, and a matter of your own personal application.

Actually, he could in theory get a nonviolent MOS like a mechanic or a computer specialist. My brother does computers for the Army. But he also says that screwups and people who piss off their CO's tend to get transferred to infantry. Given the trouble Al has getting into the marines, he'd be at high risk of infantry duty.

                            Good luck with that.

My project takes ~30 mins to build on my quad-core machine. That's a lot of thumb-twiddling/posting while at work.

Now, time to check Facebook again and hope, for the love of God, that something goes wrong!

Elok is right. Just take anything you can get right now. I fell into the same kind of trap that he did when I couldn't find my ideal job. I've been offered a full time job teaching at an absolute trash heap of inner city school. It will be awful and incredibly off putting experience but it's a step in the right direction.
