On the last bit, no. It doesn't work like that.

Active duty Marine officers do not have MOS's until they are nearly finished TBS which comes after OCS. How it works is, Second Lieutenants are allowed to make a ranked preference list but ultimately their performance/grades at TBS and the needs of the Corps are the decision-makers. There is also a quality spread to prevent all the talent from being concentrated in a few 'popular' MOS's.

    Here you go:

    MOS Guide

(Why are hyperlinks no longer automatic?)

As you can see, the quality spread means any given MOS will have officers from the top, middle, and bottom thirds of their TBS classes and that 49% reported getting their first choice.

Reserve Marine officers, however, pick an available MOS before going to OCS based on needs within a certain mile radius of their home.

You may be joking, but it is actually a good way for people to get their foot in the door for government work. Teaching for a year and then applying for administrative jobs for them will give him some good work experience and allow him to more easily move through other departments. However, TFA has actually become quite competitive these days, so if he does it he should start working on applying now before the next bunch of graduates get their act together and beat him to it.

In most cases that's true but if you are willing to work in a ****ty school, you'll find more opportunities than you could have ever imagined.

                • I did a U-turn on teaching quite early on because of the nature of the job nowadays. That and I'd end up throwing one of the little turds through a window...

Even the Ivy League kids are clamoring for TFA jobs now. That's going to affect the competition for all schools, except Kill All Americans University in Iran. They still have plenty of openings.

Some school districts in the Texas countryside still administer corporal punishment (spankings) with parental permission.

                      • Does that include the revolutionary defenestration method?

Sadly even defenestration is looked down upon in Texas.
