  • Oh please Asher, Galileo was some 400 years ago. Quit using such outdated arguments.

    • This is your problem Asher. You believe that you can know everything with reason (you aren't very good at it btw). You can't, because sometimes the absurd belief is the true belief and the reasonable belief is false.

Exactly why is having faith in absurd things admirable?

Let's say I have faith that an alien spaceship really did crash at Roswell and the creatures onboard are now being kept at Area 51. This faith gives me hope because it means that interstellar travel is possible and that we're not alone in the universe.

Is this absurd belief a good thing because it gives me hope?

I've NEVER said that, and in fact I've said MANY things completely contrary to that. You are a remarkably stupid man...

          • When the Bulls were down in the finals (or weren't best in the playoffs), but people believed that they would turn around and win it, that was faith (faith in Jordan in that case, generally). A similar meaning to the word when the Christian says that they have faith.

I don't watch hockey ( ) but I am sure there were similar situations there.

BTW, while I am glad that Kid is a Christian and think that he is a better man than Ben, I don't agree with (many of his) his arguments/statements.

Yes, this is a very compelling argument.

Faith is equivalent of a sport fanboy's hope that his team wins the championship. This is why Christianity is at war with Islam. They have faith they will be victorious!

Again, I'm not opposed to rational thinking, as you are making me out to be. However, I seek the absolute truth, and therefore I must not limit myself to rational thinking because in doing so I come to false truths.

You seek absolute truth, therefore you choose to believe in what you admit are "absurd ideas"?

I completely fail to understand how this is a response to what I said.

You did say that. You are arguing that I am wrong because I rely on faith. That is, in fact, where you are wrong, because being rational does not equal being correct.

It wasn't just hope, although hope was part of it.

It was believing in Jordan. Believing that he could win the game, could make the plays, etc.

And the winning doesn't have anything to do with Islam. Rather, it has to do with self and universal transformation.

I wasn't arguing btw, I was trying to describe faith in a better way than Kid does.

(And I do agree that what some person thinks is absurd might be correct. Like quantum mechanics. But Kids arguments don't make sense and don't make positive contributions.)

                        • Kid appears to be making the argument that faith is merely self-delusion. It can provide absolute truths because you can easily blind yourself to the reality of the world and construct your own mental model of the world which has definitive answers/absolute truths -- all of which can easily be anything you want them to be.

I won't argue with him if that's what he argues. That's what religion is.

What is your methodology for distinguishing a true absurd belief from all of the false absurd beliefs? Do you just make a guess and hope it's right?

Yes, because if you never believe in anything absurd you can not always be correct. Because sometimes absurd is the truth.

How the **** did I say you can know EVERYTHING with reason, when I've said comments like this:
I consider myself agnostic because I can't say for 100% certainty if there is or is not a God. I can say that the religions as we know them today are all absurd. Christianity, Scientology, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, whatever. They don't pass the sniff test.
