    • Looks like this has election has broken more to the GOP at the last minute. It seems unlikely that the GOP will take the senate, but last week it seemed implausible.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. • Gallup's latest findings this morning predict Republicans will easily gain the necessary 39 seats to seize control of the House regardless of voter turnout. They predict a minimum GOP gain of 60 seats "with gains well beyond that possible." That kind of rout would be the worst shellacking of a president's party in a half-century.

          • Polls aren't very good at predicting turnout.

What are the prediction markets saying?

Edit: Looks like market is predicting roughly a 60-seat gain for the GOP. That's a little lower than the poll-based predictions.

            • Looks like 51-49 for dems (including independents).

Very small chance of Republican Senate control, even with possibility of Crist or the Alaskan.

              • I'm predicting Repubs get 45 more seats in the House (that's the 30 red districts the Dems took in 2008 due to the anti-Bush wave but which no one ever espected them to hold more then one cycle plus another 15 or so genuine swing district loses) while the Dems retain 53 seats in the Senate. Talk of Republicans picking up 60 or 65 seats in the House is just DanS wanking to his fevered imagination.

                • Market-implied probability of 60+ house pickups is ~60%

It's plausible the Republicans could get someone like Ben Nelson to switch parties and Lieberman to switch caucus especially after all the **** the dems put Lieberman through for campaigning for McCain.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.
