The 37.5 hr work week is more to stop exploitation through overhours becoming the accepted norm. Any job I've had in the UK I've simply signed a waiver and worked in excess of the legal maximum (48hrs I believe) without concern.

There's a certain machismo that can sometimes be involved in these sorts of discussions which occasionally gets in the way of reason, I expect. My view is that if you're going to get paid appropriately for working long hours, then fine. Working incredibly long hours for nothing but the profits of someone else, at the expense of one's own life and one's family, is not so good, and bragging about it strikes me as odd, to say the least.

In the past I've worked 60-70 hours a week for spells and got ****-all in return in the short-term, except a mild psychosis and grey hairs. In the longer term though, it might have paid off, as many years later I got a fairly comfortable number for a while looking after a system for a client of the guys who I worked my arse off for getting their product off the ground. You can't rely on that sort of thing though.

I don't agree that Exploitation is a meaningless word, although it has fuzzy edges. A cursory glance at, for example, Victorian economic & social relations, gives a fairly unambiguous illustration. It still exists, where unfair deals exist, which they do because markets get distorted for various reasons.

Oooh, I see what you did there. Nice debate trick. I'm a kid, so there is no way I could possibly make statements which could have any basis in the real world.

News flash: I ain't the only one who feels this way, and I know a bunch of people who are over 30 and over 40 who would be rather pissed off if they had to get a waiver signed just to earn some extra cash.

I'll work whatever it takes within reason. Managing it really doesn't matter how long you work but if you're developing/coding around 10.5 hours a day is my limit. After that, I start making mistakes that will force me to redo it the next day. So unless it's super critical, working long is just plain stupid. For short stretches of time you can work some one 12-15 hours a day, but if you don't let up, they'll burn out. There are people that claim they did it for years, but for those, I'm suspect and question their time management skills and what they're actually accomplishing. We had one manager that claimed he worked 14 hours a day, but a lot of it was simple face time that impressed nobody.

Indeed. They are now LIMITED to 80-hours a week max, with a maximum of 30 hours continuous. It is unclear how many residency programs fudge those numbers, but mine tried to play it pretty straight.

Also, just for the record, while residents work 80 hrs/wk for anywhere from 3-9 years, depending on the residency, they are also getting paid barely above minimum wage.
