You were a pr!ck when you were in academia, now you're a pr!ck now you're some Gordon Gecko wannabe...I don't think there is any aspect of life you couldn't bring being a pr!ck too...

Provost, please don't start with me. Unlike most of my victims, I will feel bad when I wipe my ass with you.

You might also want to choose a more likable character to start your defence with.

I offered albie some advice when he first came back. Since then, it's become apparent that he's uninterested in any concrete advice to improve his life, and instead simply wants a forum in which to express his victimhood.

He was born with greater-than-average intelligence, went to a decent enough university, but when it came time to doing the actual hard work of finding a job in which to continue his training, he lost interest when the opportunity to land in the top 1% of university graduates was not handed to him on a silver platter.

I find this attitude repugnant, and am not afraid to tell him so.

Productivity vs Working hours is an interesting graph, although a difficult thing to measure. There's some very interesting research in the area that suggests that just working longer hours doesn't make you a more useful resource.

In many jobs there's a quality vs quantity trade off. I would wager that even KH would produce higher quality work with a shorter working week. It's the competitive environment that drives the hours. Not necessarily that it's the most efficient use of resources.

It's role dependent obviously. Mainly applies to roles that require you to think.

I remember a few years back when my brother was working at KPMG... he was working 18+ hours a day. Ridiculous. But it worked out for him. 5 years out of college and he's set for life. THough if he had stayed at KPMG it probably wouldn't have happened. Just happened to impress the right person with his work ethic.

I know for a fact that an awful lot of time was wasted by people at CSFB sticking around till late so as to be seen working as late as the boss etc. As KH says, it's not salary that's the most financially rewarding, but the bonuses - and those are often awarded on an extremely arbitrary basis by your bosses.

I flirted with the investment bank industry for a few years when I lived in London and decided it just wasn't for me. Sure I'm worse off for that decision financially - but far better off, er, 'spiritually'...
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

Well yes, but some people certainly would be better doing more work. Why prevent people from ever working long hours?

Imagine you're a doctor. Oh, I'm sorry, I can't give you that surgery because I've already worked 37.5 hours this week. I don't care that you're going to die otherwise, it's illegal!

Besides, 40-hour workweeks are a ****ing joke. If that's the most you can take, you are a giant ****ing baby.

Can't speak for Hubris Collider, but if I was being prepped for cardio-thoracic surgery I really wouldn't feel too impressed by knowing that my surgeon was working an 80 hour week.

                          • The 37.5 hr work week is more to stop exploitation through overhours becoming the accepted norm. Any job I've had in the UK I've simply signed a waiver and worked in excess of the legal maximum (48hrs I believe) without concern.

How is that exploitation?! What's wrong with working long hours? Why is it illegal for your boss to try to get you to work hard? How is that a problem? Jesus christ you all are pussies.

At least you can sign a waiver so the law isn't totally disastrous.

                              • We would probably get better quality health care and cheaper if we opened up the medical community some by decreasing requirements on those training to be doctors.

There would be more doctors, and they would work less hours.
