Holy ****, you leave a thread for a few hours and this happens!

It still boils down to the fact that the US is ****ed up IMO because there were several ways to avoid this situation happening in the 1st place:

1) Have a Socialist Fire Service where everyone is legally obliged to pay tax to maintain it. (clearly the most preferable and obvious choice)

2) Failing that, have a clearly stipulated clause where any homeowner that's forgotten/not paid their insurance has to pay a fee of 100x the cost of the initial insurance - sort of like a 'lifetime' penalty. (You pays your money and takes your chances - while not perfect, I could live with that)

3) Just have some people with even the tiniest iota of compassion... (Christian values, basic good morals)

or

4) Just be a c*nty uncaring bastard and watch the place burn to the ground a la HC, KH et al...

In a civilised society there is NO WAY this family's house should have burned down - end of story!

1) is up to county voters. It is on their head if county residents make stupid decisions as a result

2) is unworkable, for reasons previously stated (by the way, the fee would likely be significantly higher than 7500$; I'm guessing in the 20k range). In all likelihood, the vast majority of people would be unable to pay

3) That sort of "compassion" we can live without. **** this douchebag. He's still far better off than 90% of the world's population. If the city wants to give away free handjobs they should start with the third world, not some ****ing irresponsible dickhead who's a millionaire by the standards of most people in the world.

But didn't we discover that he only missed the payment because he was away from home when it was due? And he'd paid previously, so he wasn't trying to dupe the system.

So whatever the economic rights and wrongs we can be sympathetic that a mistake cost him his house right?

While I agree with all those that state that the city firefighters had no legal obligation to put out this fire and It's the owners fault for the fire in the first place and neglecting to pay the fee, and from a pr standpoint it probably would have been better if they hadn't bother to even go. (which would have been hard since they were obligated to deal with it if it spread), But once they were on-site with their equipment, how could they not have helped. Moral obligation/charity is not really part of the equation for me. I'd have an obligation to my fellow man to help, and couldn't sit by and do nothing. I consider those that did schmucks.
