  • No pay, no spray: Firefighters let home burn

What do you think about this? If nothing else, it would seem that some kind of change is in order.

Tennessee house in ashes after homeowner 'forgot' to pay $75 fee

Firefighters in rural Tennessee let a home burn to the ground last week because the homeowner hadn't paid a $75 fee.

Gene Cranick of Obion County and his family lost all of their possessions in the fire, along with three dogs and a cat.

"They could have been saved if they had put water on it, but they didn't do it," Cranick told MSNBC's Keith Olbermann.

The fire started when the Cranicks' grandson was burning trash near the family home. As it grew out of control, the Cranicks called 911, but the fire department from the nearby city of South Fulton would not respond.

"We wasn't on their list," he said the operators told him.

Cranick, who lives outside the city limits, admits he "forgot" to pay the annual $75 fee. The county does not have a county-wide firefighting service, but South Fulton offers fire coverage to rural residents for a fee.

Cranick says he told the operator he would pay whatever is necessary to have the fire put out.

His offer wasn't accepted, he said.

The fire fee policy dates back 20 or so years.

"Anybody that's not inside the city limits of South Fulton, it's a service we offer. Either they accept it or they don't," said South Fulton Mayor David Crocker.

Firefighters did eventually show up, but only to fight the fire on the neighboring property, whose owner had paid the fee.

"They put water out on the fence line out here. They never said nothing to me. Never acknowledged. They stood out here and watched it burn," Cranick said.

South Fulton's mayor said that the fire department can't let homeowners pay the fee on the spot, because the only people who would pay would be those whose homes are on fire.

Cranick, who is now living in a trailer on his property, says his insurance policy will help cover some of his lost home.

"Insurance is going to pay for what money I had on the policy, looks like. But like everything else, I didn't have enough."

      Why is that Slowwie?

Surely as someone who is anti socialism, such a concept as a universal fire-fighting service is anathema to you?

Surely, as a card carrying Republican, you should be shouting from the rooftops that these people deserved it because they didn't pay their dues!

Jesus H. Christ, your country is ****ed up!

Sloww is a Republican? Since when?

It could be worse... this is how Crassus got rich:

Most notorious was his acquisition of burning houses: when Crassus received word that a house was on fire, he would arrive and purchase the doomed property along with surrounding buildings for a modest sum, and then employ his army of 500 clients to put the fire out before much damage had been done.

So people just shouldn't have to pay for firefighters anymore? It should all be free? WTF?

These people don't live in the city of South Foulton, so they're not paying the taxes that keep the system operational. They refused to pay the optional fee to get the service, which is available to rural residents outside of the city.

Let's not forget that this whole thing was started because their grandson was burning trash and lost control of the fire. It's common sense to keep control of fires, and to exercise caution when burning trash next to your home. Take out a shovel, dig a pit for the fire, and circle it with rocks. The loose dirt from the pit can be used to control the blaze.

****ing retards screw up **** for everybody else. Now they're probably going to pass a law against burning trash just because some dumbass kid did it wrong.

Seems to me the system worked just fine, and as intended. What kind of change do you think is in order, Slowwie? Should South Fulton stop extending its fire service beyond the city limits altogether?

the firefighting service is not even private ?!? WFT socialist county is that, if the firefigthing service was privatized I bet they would be putting out fires for few thousand dollars at a time, the guy would surely pay that, or borrow on the spot and an order of magnitude greater damage would have been stopped. Either that or insurace, such issues can only occur if you have socialist firefighers watching your home burn and don't want to move their asses for any amount of money on the spot

Is the price of rural firefighting regulated? can firefighters gouge rural property owners because they have a monopoly?

Why just didn't they put out the fire and sent him a bill over 75 bucks?

Oh and at "The county does not have a county-wide firefighting service, but South Fulton offers fire coverage to rural residents for a fee."

Because it costs a lot more than 75$.

Probably they should have put the fire out and billed for ~10000$ or whatever, but probably they wouldn't get paid.
