    No merging stuff.
Maritimes combined are only about 2 and a third million people. This is less than Connecticut.

Irrelevant. Unless they want to merge they don't merge.

Why is it irrelevant? NYE seems to want US states to merge, when the average state is much larger in population than the average province.

They should merge. 5 states is more than enough for all of Canada.

If you want to fantasize about joining the US you should respect the U.S. constitution. There is no population requirement for states and the head of state is elected by the electoral college every four years.

There is a population requirement for states, the congress set it at 60 thousand people.

            PEI is currently at 140k.

Wyoming is 5x the size and is currently the smallest.

This is why neither of the territories would make it as states, nor should PEI. You could argue for 3, but not 4 states, 9 states from 10 provinces.

That's more of a guideline/suggestion, for example Nevada had less than 60 thousand people when it was admitted. And I should add that all of the provinces meet that requirement.

10 states from 10 provinces would be fine.

6 vs 30 senators in the Canadian system.

2 vs 8 senators under your system.

Amazingly, even the US system is fairer than the Canadian senate.

It was entirely unconstitutional. Why am I not surprised to see Lincoln pulling that garbage just before an election? Admitting a state during the civil war to help him win?

2 senators for 2.5 million people is the fairest way to do it.

The Canadian provinces should merge, gribbler. Otherwise, Canadians would have far too much representation per population in the Senate. Look at early 19th century history to see why this is relevant.

Senators represent states, not people. It doesn't matter if some states have more people than others. California isn't going to be split into multiple states and Rhode Island isn't going to be merged with Connecticut.

Gribbler, it is relevant with the senate representation.

Lemme chart out the different options.

                          gribbler:
Population has always been important with regards to senate representation. It's why slavery wasn't abolished peacefully through the legislative branch despite the fact that most of the population was Northerners. Southerners had disproportionate representation in the Senate relative to the North. In your plan, Canadians would be over-represented in the Senate.

(of course, even today, Wyoming residents are over-represented in the Senate relative to California residents)
