  • The United Commonwealth of America

Several Americans are expressing their displeasure with monarchy in the Australian Election thread. 'Why don't you subjects of royalty get on with it, abolish the monarchy, and elect your heads of state?'

Well, I think they have the issue turned upside down. I think that Americans should come to their senses after their hissy fit of some two hundred and fifty years. They need to accept Elizabeth and her successors and heirs as their rightful monarch and petition Canada to join Confederation.

If approved California, Texas, New York, and Florida would be accepted into the united British North American entity as provinces. Each would get eight senators. The rest of the states would combine in a rational manner into sensible geographic entities and be accepted as eight or ten additional provinces such as the Carolinas (N and S Carolina with Georgia, perhaps) Patriot Columbia (Washington, Oregon, and Idaho) Southern Alberta (the Northern Plains states and Colorado) etc. New England speaks for itself.

The benefits to the American people are many and manifest. They would be introduced to Responsible Government. Corruption would be largely eliminated as the Mounties always get their man. Gun violence would largely be eliminated as citizens would find themselves under reasonable restrictions for purchase and possesion of firearms and the factories that produce the millions of illicit firearms would come under sensible regulation. Budgets would rapidly be brought into balance as the Canadian/UCA dollar would not be a world reserve currency and fiscal discipline would be enforced by the market. Gay marriage? Settled. Abortion? Dealt with. Health care? Universal. The benefits are too numerous to be contained in a single post.

As an added bonus, states rights would receive a massive boost as the provinces have true sovereignty over the land and in many areas of public policy such as education, health care, etc.

Washington DC is ideally suited to be a seat of government, so the civil service and legislators would largely move there. Ottawa is an ideal capital, so the Governor General would remain there. The Parliament building is kind of palatial, so the GG would move in there and a wing would be reserved as the Royal Residence when the Queen decides to visit.

The Congress would become the new Parliament, with the Prime Minister being an MP from the renamed House of Commons. Of course the Senate will remain elected, but there will be a great deal more senators. Perhaps proportional representation by province could be introduced in this revamped upper house. The subject would certainly merit a Royal Commission to study the idea.

The sacrifices that Canadians would be asked to endure to welcome our brothers and sisters in America back into the right and just fold of the Commonwealth of Nations are large. We might be asked to change the name. However, we would benefit as we'd be instantly better at football (both kinds) our hockey teams would likely never lose another game in international competition, and the National Hockey League would return to the status of being properly named.

It's not rocket science, get on with it.

Not sure if this is supposed to be a humourous thread.

The US has nothing to gain from subjecting itself to the commonwealth. Frankly I wish Canada would divorce itself as well.

Wow, all it takes is for a couple of people to point out that republics are superior and you go on a 9 paragraph rant. I guess you've been trolled.

Our constitution has a clause forbidding titles of nobility.

You'd be leaving that nonsense behind along with the rest of the Jacobin claptrap.

Well, forbidding the states or the federal government from conferring titles of nobility to be exact.

The problem is your post can't be seen as humourous because it's more sane than half the **** people really believe these days (eg, bc1871).

The bar is pretty low on poly, so it needs to be a lot more campy to be humorous here.

We have a law forbidding Canadians from accepting them.

That's how we got rid of Conrad Black.

The second last paragraph should be a give-away.

                          And, Southern Alberta? Patriot Columbia?

It's part serious, part jest. You figure out which is which.

You expect me to read all the way to the second-to-last paragraph? How literate do you think I am? Sheesh.
