I turned down full IB, just did CS IB out of interest.
You know full well that with no diploma, there's no certificate. I don't see why you trash a program that obviously helped you on your way. I knew plenty of certificate students. I can't say that the diploma students were 'socially awkward' as a rule. Quite the opposite where I was from.

The certificate students were very talented, but usually not as interdisciplinary. As greatly evidenced by you. You have a talent in one area, computer science, which is where your talents lie. We had many students who were strong in the math component, or strong in the language component, but only the diploma students did both.

I personally see both as complementary. The diploma students need the certificate students and vice versa.

Personally I found IB extremely helpful for me socially. But then, perhaps my experiences were a bit skewed because I am deaf. Low baseline to work from.

I knew IB was busywork, my friends went into it and regretted it.
I feel sorry for your friends. I was deeply disaffected when I went to University.

It's a simple fact: the kids in Canada who do full IB are stupid. There's no reason to do it.
Asher, I live in Prince George, BC. There aren't as many opportunities out this way for a top quality education. IB was a lifeline for all of us to something else. So, my choices were IB, or the public school. It wasn't a difficult choice.

So perhaps for you it wasn't necessary, but for me, it was quite necessary.

If they were smart, they'd realize it. Instead of doing full IB, I made a lot of money in my spare time
Asher, not all of us value money in the same way that you do. I'm not as good as you with computers, but I'd stack up my skills in the other areas.

We use AP here at Thomas Jefferson. Much better, and no service hours.
Well sure. CAS hours are not that difficult. 150 service hours is not very much. You can do it in 4 months if you work at it.

I have talents in many areas. Name an area, I've got far more talent in than you do. Everyone knows it.

Personally I found IB extremely helpful for me socially.
I think they are probably why you are so socially inept.

You have no skills, and your stack is a short one.

I realize not everyone values money, but let's be honest here -- you don't compare with me in any way.

Sure, you don't have money. But you've got love, right? Wait, you don't?
Sure, you don't have smarts. But you've got looks, right? Wait, you don't?
Sure, you don't have friends. But you've got a good, fulfilling job, right? Wait, you don't?

You constantly pull this "not everyone values money like you do, Asher" ****. I've got a successful long-term relationship, a very well paying job in a field where I'm in high demand, I've got (what I think) to be a fun personality and a sense of humour, and I like to think I'm fairly well-adjusted. In all of these areas, you are an epic failure in life.

So I was inflating Ben's academic credentials when I pretended to be a graduate of UBC?
Yes and no. I earned 90 credits there. 30 from IB and 36 from UNBC, but with switching programs I had to fill my prerequisites for a history degree.

So no, I didn't finish my degree at UBC, but the vast majority of the work that made up my degree was from there. All I did at UNBC was a year, and 12 3 credit history courses to fill up the history component.

My degree was basically 50 percent maths/physics/chemistry/astronomy, 25 percent english/philosophy and 25 percent history.

Overall what I earned was about 75 percent math/physics/chemistry/astronomy and about 15 percent history and 10 percent english/philosophy.

Side note: People who focus too much on academics are fools. The most successful people in life learn on their own, not in a classroom. Even when I went to school, I did almost all of my learning on my own. I knew virtually everything about CS except the most esoteric, theoretical **** on my own well before I heard about it in a classroom or textbook. I'm out of school now but I've not changed anything, I'm constantly learning on my own -- both about CS and other things.

If you're not a lifelong learner, get the **** out of the way because you're about to get run over.

Absolutely. UBC is a well-respected school, UNBC is an unknown.

I be hard pressed to imagine that anyone who posted here on Poly was lacking in skills.

I realize not everyone values money
Then you have to realise that I don't see education as a tool to earn money. I value education and learning things, because frankly, I enjoy it for it's own sake.

I don't believe you see it the same way. For you, it's all about, what's in it for me. Which is why you do what you do and why you've gone down your path. You haven't been exposed to many ideas to the extent which they become part of you. You are not really about computer science, it's just a pet that puts dollars and cents on the table.

For me, it's different. I love history. I will always do it whether it pays or not. I've made sacrifices in terms of time, and money in order to learn things. It's also why I enjoy teaching others, helping them get to their goals.

but let's be honest here -- you don't compare with me in any way.
Asher, let me make something abudantly clear. I don't give a **** about you. I honestly don't. I find it humorous that in a thread that's about Kuci, you've decided to strike out at me. Why? I don't strike at you when you talk about your experiences with computer science.

You constantly pull this "not everyone values money like you do, Asher" ****. You know what Asher? I don't care. You can shout until you are blue in the face. I'm not here to discuss the motivations of my personal life. I'm here to argue education. That's all.

And why are we so much in disagreement? I agree with you here. This is why I found UBC so chafing and found IB so liberating.

I was actually teaching the teacher about C++, it was kind of ridiculous.
Then you had a ****ty CS teacher. Sorry to hear that. Some of us had good teachers. Maybe if you did IB, you'd have experienced them.
