Successors are seldom as good as the originals. I don't like them because they haven't brought anything new. The people who have brought new things are awful.

Check it out on grooveshark. Free streaming, and legal (for now):

Best songs: Dog Days are Over, Rabbit Heart, Girl with One Eye, Howl, Kiss with a Fist, Drumming Song

BTW, its metacritic score is the same as 'American Idiot'.

I already have it downloading from my private pirate server.
Uh oh. I wasn't supposed to say that.

          Asher:

I think the neo-soul artists (Maxwell, D'Angelo, Musiq, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, etc.) have created a bit of their own, distinct from the predecessors.

no "The revolution will not be televised" on that list. I mean if you're talking influential works...

I find it interesting that the only RnB song from after the mid 80's that I can see on that list is R. Kelly's I Believe I can Fly. Nothing else from a whole genre of music.

Erykah Badu is going to trial here in Dallas, her hometown, for doing dumb. I have some of hers.

That may be, but I haven't heard much of it. I hear whatever ****ing crap they play sometimes in the Top 40 stations when I'm at the gym, and that's it.

I'm spending way too much lately on new music (almost all alt-rock/post-punk stuff) that I can't be bothered to explore modern R&B.

I have issues identifying with a lot of R&B songs coming out these days. Are the R&B people abusing the **** out of autotune like the rest of pop music?

                  Sounds about right.

R Kelly -- he fiddles kids and he's not even a priest.

Billie Holliday's Strange Fruit has to be one of the most important songs of all time. Not according to Rolling Stone magazine.

At least Time called it the song of the century.

You are confusing a rock-biased list of the best songs MUSICALLY with a song that is importantly mainly for cultural reasons, not musical ones.

                      • Hueij tried throwing Strange Fruit in my face since I'm from a Southern state. He didn't know at the time that I like Blues.

Joss Stone! No, shouldn't make the list, yet. Still, very good newer stuff.

So the placement of U2's One is biased and wrong.

Funny thing is I don't believe I've ever heard that song before. Will take a listen now

                          • Mary J. Blige is on this song... that can't be right, can it? It's even a music video.

She did a duet for a re-release of the song. Because it's such an awesome song.

But no, that's not the original.

Even the R&B community loves it...there's been a ton of duets with them for it.

The song is the basis of the "One" campaign: http://one.org/international/
