  • It's more of a callback to the old Motown sound, where black women also had very deep singing voices.

Instead I hear what sounds like a white woman trying very hard to sound like a black man. I can't hear her sing without immediately thinking of that part in "Spaceballs" where they stumble across the princess singing black spirituals.
You are confusing quality with personal taste.

Simplicity can be beautiful, when it's done properly. A bunch of powerchords ceased being beautiful by around the time the 1000th band started forming songs just around them.

I've never seen anything to suggest you have any musical taste. You just moved from kid friendly pop rock to adult friendly pop rock.
And I have heard your bands of old.

        Checkmate.

And I don't consider my tastes today pop-rock, by and large. I do like some pop-rock.

When it comes to music, is there such a thing as purely objective 'quality?' Aside from the matter of purely technical skill, of course, as in John Bonham being a better drummer than Meg White. But then there are plenty of opera singers who have greater range and control than pretty much any bluesman who ever lived, and that doesn't mean we should all love opera and despise the blues. And I assume that's not what you meant anyway, because IIRC (it's been a while), Winehouse had a fairly flat affect to her voice. Not totally flat, but not what you'd call super-lively either. No real power in it, if you want to talk about 'quality.' An actual black man would probably provide some much-needed resonance.

Really music, like art, is almost entirely a matter of personal taste. I'm asking what people find emotionally appealing about Amy Winehouse, that's all.

            Boris would disagree.

"Rehab" is a good song, FWIW. I dig the anger and power in her voice in that song. Don't know her other songs.

                • So I watched the episode and the rendition of "One" is in a completely different context, which is why it is so "up". It is about the club being one group that carries each other, even if they are all different people who push and pull in different ways - does it do a different meaning of the song, yeah.. it's a musical, they do that to fit the plot (and according to Bono, that's one way to see the song anyways).

Anyways, next week is Joss Whedon directing (can't wait to see what he'll do with Sue Sylvester!) and Neil Patrick Harris as the guest star, Woots!!

                        • No, Marines are not part of the Navy. Part of the Department of the Navy but not part of the Navy. The distinction is subtle but important.
