But the main question is WTF, re: university course on U2?!
They offered 3 modern Music History courses, I took two of them: "U2: Even better than the Real Thing" and "Rock Music of the 1980s". They also had one on Led Zeppelin, but it was full. They fulfilled some of my humanities credits.

Best courses I've ever taken. Seriously. Only ones I had perfect attendance in, my other courses I skipped >50% of the time.

The instructor was a retired oilpatch millionaire lawyer who had a genuine passion for the music. He retired to play and teach music he loves.

So you admit that that list has an obvious rock bias so the position of a U2 song on it is affected by this bias?

Stick with showtunes and madonna, stay away from music with meaning.
I felt the same way when they did it to "Ice, Ice, Baby."

          Rock Music of the 1980s

          Accredited university?

Clearly a BA in Canada means less than in America.

It's a list of the only types of song that matters.

I'm sure you're torn up that rap songs don't dominate, but such is life.

              Of course it's accredited.

It's far more culturally relevant than the dance classes universities offer, or art history, etc. It's on par with film studies, really.

If it wasn't offered I'd have to take Anthropology courses or something, which would be completely ****ing useless to me. Instead I ended up learning a lot about music that I appreciate and utilize to this day. It made me more well-rounded. I even used what I learned in that class to help build my algorithm in a CS course I was taking to algorithmically guess the genre of music of a provided mp3 file.

                From the Rolling Stone's list:

                489 - Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive.mp3
                ....
                497 - Weezer - Buddy Holly.mp3
(appeal to homosexuality)Come on, Asher. I Will Survive only 8 songs better than Weezer? You know that's not right. The list is flawed.(/appeal to homosexuality)

Buddy Holly was a great song from the 90s. I Will Survive is another good one.

                  Great list.

Weezer was great in the 1990s. After 2000, they started sucking. Same with Green Day.

So EVERYTHING before 1956 does not matter? Really, Asher? Jazz is not music?

Meh. Anything from "American Idiot" was better than anything Weezer did, and I like Weezer (especially the blue album).

I said it doesn't matter, but it is music.

Opera doesn't matter either, but it is music.

                        Rap isn't even music.

"American Idiot" was a fantastic album for 13 year olds from coast to coast in America.

It was far too poppy, far too predictable, far too preachy, and far too bland. Every song has exactly the same song structure. Their new album is even worse. My God.

I did love how Green Day filmed the "American Idiot" video live from the UK. Tens of thousands of Brits screaming "I don't want to be an American idiot" Inspired, Green Day, inspired. The idiots in America didn't even notice.

Disclaimer: Green Day was the very first concert I ever went to (in Oakland in the late 90s). Also my first exposure to marijuana, by second-hand smoke. My dad went with me. Yes, my dad is awesome.

I have it on good authority that this is the only good rap 'song' ever:

Blues. Can't forget Blues. This is a Rock list though.
