Not being a parent, I know very little about parenting. But I don't see how spanking is child abuse. And I think claims that it teaches kids to be violent are unproven speculation.
I'm also not a parent (hence no strong opinion on the subject) but I think the opposite.

Is it really a stretch to assume a parent using violence as a "teaching tool" will not influence their kids to use violence as a "teaching tool" in their future?

You could spin it the other way and claim it teaches them to respect authority, making them more likely to obey the law in the future.
If you believe they will follow that thought process through. I'm more inclined to think the immediate threat to personal safety has a more profound impact.
