So you only advocate smacking around people 5 and under?

^^ Physical trauma, learning that the world is unfair and being taught to dominate others with physical force are lessons for the developmental years?

Parent of two girls (ages 3 and 4).

Do I think parents should be allowed to spank? Yes.
Will I spank my children? No.

Sorta like abortion. Should women have the choice? Yes. Would I be willing to make that choice (if I were a woman)? No.

Was I spanked as a child? Maybe 3-4 times total. Used sparingly, spanking can maintain the "shock" value that really drives home a point.

A little "Shock and Awe" for the kids, ay? Nice.

Don't worry, they'll return the favor as soon as they get the chance. Perhaps not directly to the parents... they'll probably start with physically abusing animals and then move up to people.

Spanking is WAY more the cause of violence in the US than guns.

If they can't have reasoned through that the stove is hot. But can take aversion (which very young kids can't), than yeah... I would rather have a light swat to teach aversion rather than a possible scarring (and much more painful) burn.

What if the parents are abusive? AFAIK no western nation allows parents to do whatever they want to/with their children. They certainly can't sell them like other possessions.

Parents have the responsibility to care for children, not the state. Yes, you are right that they are individuals but we don't give them the same rights or responsibilities as adults.

Great. I was spanked and was also well behaved. That's 1-1 for anecdotes.
You'll note I said "no more effective" so actually that's 2-0 to me.

I haven't seen this be the case.

There is a huge difference between spanking as used as discipline and physical abuse. And you can see it in the two different sets of kids. I have siblings who were physically abused. I and my brother were spanked.

                  Our responses/behavior/formulation were extremely different.

No, I and my brother were never abusive to animals or people.

Same with groups that I didn't observe as closely as my own family members.

As OT Mod I do not spank Asher and he's much better behaved. Conclusive evidence.

Asher is an adult, with fully functional reasoning ability and a full set of experiences.

You should be able to say "stop" and your kid stops still because it knows you are serious and looking out for them.

This whole idea that we need to slap kids around to keep them away from stoves and electrical outlets is retarded. What if one has a particularly dangerous house, then the kid gets smacked alot? That beyond retarded, it's fkn ridiculous. Sweden outlawed spanking and there was not a spike in kids touching stoves.

Hey dude, why is your nose crooked, your ear deformed, some teeth chipped, an eyeball floating about in its socket and your neck angled?!

My parents collected ancient weapons and then protected me from them.
