Officials have said now that it wasn't the track that killed him, he made an error in how he took the curve and crashed. If you think about it, having been hurled into the air at nearly 90 miles per hour he would have died no matter what he struck. From the looks of it the pole he hit was holding up a roof in a spectator area. Imagine if this had happened during a competition and the area had been packed with people. There might have been multiple deaths in addition to his own.

For one thing, he's a local hero. He's been in Vancouver since he was drafted in '88. He's played the most number of games of any Canuck, and this is despite spending years back east.
