I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

      Yes.

59% of Americans favour overturning it in the last poll.

Not sure why civil rights or equality should ever be put up for mob rule or popular vote anyway.

So your belief is that Gays are incapable of protecting Americans, or is it that if there's one gay in a platoon, that platoon is now incapable of defending Americans?

I'll admit that I'd feel better protected if it was being done by a few of my gay friends than if it was you. I guess that makes be a bigot when it comes bigots.

There's a few issues that might have to be dealt with (possible housing issues, fraternization issues, etc.) but beyond that I don't see much of a problem.

My belief is that if a platoon cares more about not offending people, that they are useless in standing up for me and the rest of us. Excluding people who do not reach the mark is not discriminatory. Rank discipline is important, and anyone who deviates from it to engage in sexual advances, gay or straight should be drummed out. Professionalism comes first.

Since Rah quoted BK, I'm going to respond to BK's stupid comment about political correctness.

This is not about political correctness. If BK knew how to read, he would have seen my comments in the OP about real-world, practical issues of "don't ask, don't tell" that negatively affect the quality of life for gays and lesbians enlisted in the American military. And there's nothing petty or "politically correct" in the pejorative sense, about recognizing gays and lesbians as being equally human as straight people.

Maybe suicide rates and psychological/emotional health are not that much concern for BK.

That I can agree with. Gays should be allowed to serve and protect us. If they make unwanted sexual advances they should be treated the same as any other soldier.

All a straight guy has to do when he is hit on by a gay guy is say, "Sorry man, I'm straight." Is that complicated?

What the **** does this have to do with your opinion about gays in the military? You dodged the question. Again.

I don't believe I said that they were insurmountable obstacles but it isn't exactly as simple as you seem to think. An essay you might be interested in: http://www.ndu.edu/inss/Press/jfq_pa...ons/i55/14.pdf

Hell, IIRC, the British and Israeli militaries allow gay people to serve and there have been few problems there.
