Good ****ing God, was my title ever prescient for this thread.

So now Edmontonians are digging through criminal proceedings and scraping the bottom of the barrel to try and discredit the owner of the restaurant. You guys have just reached a brand new low -- you're quoting criminal proceedings and implying that the owner was the guy in the proceedings because they share the same last name, WHEN THEY ARE NOT. It took me to call you on this ****.

Whether or not the guy has a sleazy brother is not the point of discussion here. Just how ****ing far will you go to try to detract from the public behaviour of the Oilers?

This is pathetic, nye...truly. The Oilers are taking a public flogging, Edmontonians are making themselves look like classless *******s with displays like what we've just seen (his brother was arrested, clearly the whole family is a bunch of douches!), and some Italian restaurant I've never been to nor plan on going to is also getting some flak. It's a pretty awesome display.

I'll tell you this much -- if the Oilers didn't run Ryan Smyth out of town, this would've never happened.

They are brothers and the convict also works at the restaurant. It is a family business, Asher. The mouth piece is not the sole proprietor.

The fact that the convict brother behaved as he did is a matter of public record. I wonder where the abusive behaviour in this case came from?

Furthermore, the convict is on record as having falsely accused a police officer of theft. It is no stretch at all to believe that a familiy business where the family is proud of the little one would be guilty of padding bills and trying to bilk famous people for the publicity.

Both sons are demonstrated to lie for their own benefit.

Whether or not the guy has a sleazy brother is not the point of discussion here. Just how ****ing far will you go to try to detract from the public behaviour of the Oilers?
The convict is associated with the business.

Part of the evidence against the convict is fabricating behaviour of others.

His older brother has been caught in his own lies.

It is appropriate to examine the character of the people levelling accusations of improper conduct in a dispute they made public, especially when the older brother already put his own character into question with his own self-incriminating lies.

I'll tell you this much -- if the Oilers didn't run Ryan Smyth out of town, this would've never happened.

What an event this has been for awesome news stories.

The globeandmail had a big article today (one of the most popular) calling the Oilers cheapskates.

Now it turns out nye is right -- the restaurant was bad. They're now under investigation for serving too much alcohol to the classy Edmonton Oilers.

Calgary restaurant accused of over-serving Oilers

The province is investigating an anonymous complaint that a Calgary restaurant served too much liquor to members of the Edmonton Oilers on New Year's Eve.

A caller to the Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission accused staff at Osteria de Medici of over-serving alcohol, which has sparked an investigation, said Christine Wronko, a spokeswoman for the agency.

New provincial training protocols went into effect at midnight Jan. 1, requiring all people selling or serving liquor in a licensed premises to be certified in the ProServe program.

The program trains staff to identify over-intoxication, when to refuse service of alcohol and how to handle situations involving minors. It also advises employees of their legal responsibilities.

The investigation into the allegation involving the Oilers will be thorough and could take several weeks or even months, Wronko said.

If any wrongdoing is uncovered, the Italian restaurant, located in the Kensington neighbourhood, could be fined or lose its liquor licence.
          Restaurant, team dispute $17K bill

Restaurant manager Maurizio Terrigno complained to the news media on New Year's Day that the Oilers refused to pay their full $16,796.39 bill, which included a bar tab of more than $8,000.

About 45 people — including Oilers players, their wives and girlfriends — wined and dined in the restaurant's private room after a loss to the Calgary Flames on Dec. 31. A team spokesman said the players felt the bill was inflated.

Terrigno said they finally paid the bill, including a $1,888 tip, after the restaurant knocked $6,000 off the final tab.

Two days later, Terrigno said, the situation had been "resolved" with the team but he did not give any details.

"I don't quite think that the truth is out there," Edmonton player Patrick O'Sullivan said Monday of the dispute over the bill. "And that's all I'll say because I don't know what I'm allowed to say and we have people involved in the situation that are taking care of it from a legal standpoint."

In March, former U.S. president George W. Bush dined at the restaurant the night before giving a speech to an invitation-only crowd of 1,500 people.

Restaurant at centre of Oilers controversy under investigation
            Updated: Mon Jan. 04 2010 17:56:02

            ctvcalgary.ca

The restaurant at the centre of a bill dispute with the Edmonton Oilers now faces an investigation of its own.

Alberta Liquor and Gaming wants to know if Osteria de Medici staff over-served alcohol to the professional hockey players and their partners.

On New Year's Eve, staff said the team refused to pay their nearly $17-thousand tab.

The restaurant says after arguing over the price of their food and drinks, the Oilers paid about $12-thousand instead

Since then, the restaurant and team have resolved their dispute, but the story isn't over.

New provincial regulations took effect on New Year's Day requiring staff at licensed restaurants to be trained to look for signs of over intoxication.

An anonymous tipster called liquor authorities to say staff continued to serve the Oilers, even after they were obviously extremely drunk.

If this is true, the restaurant could face thousands of dollars in fines.

Meanwhile, Oilers players maintain they did nothing wrong.

"I'll put it this way: I don't quite think that the truth is out there. We have people involved in the situation taking care of it from a legal standpoint," said centre Patrick O'Sullivan.

"I don't want to say it puts negative light on us because we didn't do anything wrong," said defenceman Denis Grebeshkov,

The owner of Osteria de Medici, Maurizio Terrigno, didn't comment on this Monday.

However, on the weekend, Terrigno asked both CTV and the Globe and Mail for money to do any more interviews.

                    • wow-- I hadn't realized you two had gone at it so much. I find a couple of things come out of this story

                      - The Oil do not look good here-- I didn't really see where they ever alleged they were charged for things they did nor have. IF they wanted by the bottle pricing they need to arrange that ahead of time. You don't have 40 shots of tequila and then say " we don't payfior 40 shots, we pay for one bottle.

-The restaurant does not look good here. The rush to the media with the story strikes me as completely wrong, particularly for an establishment that tries to cater to elite and celebrities. I would have thought a little decorum and tact would have been called for.

I don't know what happened here but in talking it over with friends they indicated that many restaurants at private parties are only too willing to open as many bottles of wine as possible since their markup on booze is so high. Usually there is no set rule on who can order so pretty much anyone can comment to a waiter " I like this wine, send out a case" and before you know it they will have those 12 bottles open and added to the bill.

I did say elsewhee that the original tab works out to less than 400 per person. Do I find that a bit high? yes. But I am not usually having even one bottle of really expensive wine. For

1)a bunch of millionaires drinking heavily
2)people drinking premium and expensive stuff and
                      3) an establishment thats probably as pricy as anywhere in Calgary

I was not completely shocked at the amount of the bill.

That's exactly what I was thinking. A $12k bar tab and they buy Coors Light.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. These fine upstanding citizens paid the renegotiated tab.

They don't look too bad. Ever renegotiated a tab that seems to have a few extra items on it? Also, if I'm spending this kind of money, I would expect the establishment to comp me a few, as bartenders at the places that I go to do with their regulars. TIPs go both ways.
