  • How "Christian" of him!!

Great news today: marriage equality has just passed in Washington, D.C.!

It's a huge victory, and you should be proud – your support allowed us to invest tremendous staff time and resources into this fight. We did it, and I can't thank you enough.

But before we celebrate, I need your help. You may have heard that in a blatantly political move to prevent this vote the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington last month threatened to cut their social service programs if the bill passed.

I'm not making this up. They'd cut homeless shelters, food programs for needy families, and health services rather than provide equal benefits for employees in same-sex marriages. And now that the bill has passed, we need to make sure they don't follow through on their threat.

Tell Archbishop Wuerl not to play politics with the less fortunate – ask him to continue Catholic Charities' city-supported social services.

The Archbishop issued a very public threat last month designed to scare city officials into backing off their commitment to marriage equality.

Thankfully, heroic D.C. Council members in Washington didn't cave under pressure. They spoke numerous times with church officials in an effort to reach common ground, while moving forward with the legislation. But unfortunately, Archbishop Wuerl has refused to alter his official position.

The D.C. Council has stood up for fairness and equality. Now they need our help to make sure the neediest citizens of the city aren't forced to pay an unfair and cruel price.

Please ask the Archbishop not to use marriage equality as an excuse to hurt thousands of homeless and needy people in Washington, D.C.

Today's victory means a great deal, coming after marriage equality losses in New York and Maine. The bill now goes to the Mayor Adrian Fenty, who has promised to sign it. The U.S. Congress then has 30 days to review the legislation. After that window passes, the bill becomes law!

We will keep you updated as the bill progresses – and we will have to be vigilant even after the bill becomes law because the U.S. Congress can choose to intervene and overturn the law at any time – a loophole the radical right is bound to try to exploit.

For now, I thank you for standing strong – not only for marriage equality, but for all the citizens of Washington, D.C. during the holiday season.
Sending homeless people out into freezing weather, and forcing other needy people to go hungry just to act out of hateful spite and to avoid having to give equal benefits to gay and lesbian couples who work for such charities.

This archbishop is setting out to hurt needy people who were not even involved with the civil rights activism leading to passage of equal marriage rights! He's not a Christian.

I'm fine with the Archbishop declining to take public money. The council was forewarned.

If there are others who can provide the services just as well for the money, then more power to them.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

As well they should. Actions have consequences.

I love it how people are willing to take Christian charity and piss on Christian principles.

True - start taxing them like any other company.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

How is that any different than killing their charity work? Brilliant solution.

provide equal benefits for employees in same-sex marriages.
Why should the Church have to do anything which violates her principles? There should be a conscience exemption.

Mr Fun, can you explain why there is no conscience exemption in the bill?

So to be a Christian, we need to deliberately turn away people who need shelter and food when we are perfectly capable of doing so?

Well, if they won't do charity work, it's just fair - doesn't matter why they don't want to do it.

Well, off hand I would say that employment discrimination and medical procedures are entirely different matters. Also, it's not requiring Catholic charities to perform same-sex marriages, just to not discriminate when it comes to benefits for married couples.

At any rate, I don't mind that the Archbishop is taking this stance at all. It's terrible PR for the Church.

This was never about charity. If it was, there would have been a conscience clause.

If they put a conscience clause in the bill, the Church would be more than happy to continue doing what they've always done.

Good works are important, but to abandon the faith, is too great a cost.

That amounts to the same. Why should the Catholic church hire people who are opposed to their mission? This is no different than forcing synagogues to hire Muslims.

It's a show of integrity. The PR is all on Washington. Why is there no conscience clause?

IMO, they want the Church to do all that charity while throwing all that nasty Gospel stuff in the trash.

Terrible bill, and the worst thing is that it will hurt the constituents.

While the 'true faithful" will cheer on the Archbishop, many more christians will be disgusted.... the number of people leaving the church will continue to increase... with eventually, only the real hardcore nut jobs left. Good job you morons. No wonder that the church is becoming less and less relevent in moe people's lives.
