There's signs in both cases, and there's nothing to indicate that it was conservatives who shot and hung the census worker.

I've heard drug dealers call cops feds, even ones that are obviously local cops.

It just sounds cooler to say that the feds are busting people than to say that the cops are.

Not exactly; purely for the unintentional comedy I occasionally tune into some shortwave rants from that ilk and at least once I've heard anger about the Census Bureau asking questions that get too personal, including most importantly (but not limited to) whether the resident owns a gun (I don't know if that's a real question; it's just the accusation). In their view the Census' only constitutional purpose was a "head count" for the purpose of apportioning House representation, and anything else lacks enumerated power, constitutes infringement on privacy rights, or both.

So no, even something as innocuous as the Census is controversial in those circles. From a purely textualist and/or originalist perspective you might even say they have a point.
