Police said the area has a history of drug trouble including methamphetamine trafficking and marijuana growing in its forested valleys between steep hills and ridges.

I'd imagine that the carving of "Fed" onto him was someone's bright idea of making the killing seem politically motivated. From his description as a part-time teacher and part-time census worker, it doesn't sound as if he had enough money to be worth robbing. Maybe the robbers discovered this after having robbed him.

I had a similar reaction to the "Fed" thing. Sounds possibly drug-related. The anti-gummint crazy hypothesis is possible, but if I was putting money on it I'd go with the drug thing.

"Shiners" = my short term for moonshiners. I would've thought it fairly obvious. These days they would also produce various other illegal drugs that have become more profitable. Lest we forget, these guys have a long history with the reven-oo-ers i.e. "Feds". And they invented NASCAR!

Wouldn't drug dealers be more likely to use the word "narc"? Better yet, wouldn't they be more likely to stash his body somewhere it wouldn't be found? I think the word "Fed" might more likely be used by a militia type, or a gun nut.
