We should randomly put nuts into all food stuffs in order to weed out the genetically unfit.

I'm not allergic to peanuts - used to love them when I was a kid, but I have nasty reactions to other nuts so I avoid them altogether now. I'm ok with "made in a factory that uses nuts", but tend to steer clear of "contains actual nuts". Hang on, why am I responding to Oerdin's post - definite nut content there. (Sorry for that **** joke :whattheforkhappenedtothathityourselfontheheadwith ahammersmiley?:)

I worked in a French hotel over the summer at university, afin d'ameliorer mon argot, et tout ca, and licked my finger accidentally after picking up an ice cream glass to wash it. My eyelid swelled up, and I couldn't work for the rest of the night. Bonus! Or not... Stupid creme de noisette! Stupid me!

[edit]Apologies for no accents, mais je n'ai plus envie a utiliser les chiffres a ameliorer mon francais, and also why does it automatically stick a space in if you type too many characters all together? [/edit]

Allergies seem like an out of control epidemic in the US...

            Must suck to have them.
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

                Update on Jace:

We stopped giving peanuts, eggs, and milk and his digestive issues continued and still are continuing; he hasn't had a solid bowel movement in 3 months. We saw a GI and they took blood so we'll know more by the end of the week, initial thought is celiac disease. We also need to get him tested for cystic fibrosis. He had his routine doctor appointment today and he gained more weight than we thought, but he's still underweight for his age and length. In addition, he has been referred to physical therapy because at 15 months he still hasn't taken his first unaided step. He'll walk while pushing a stool and run while torturing the dog, but other than that...

He's a very happy kid given these issues, which he is apparently unaware of. He eats more than his sister at every meal and we have been told on many occasions that he is just the happiest kid they've ever met. The only time he really cries is when he's hungry.

eh, we'll see. I was hoping to get this all squared away by the end of the year because his deductible comes due again, looks like I'll be out another $2k...

Good luck... Just keep pushing the doctors. And if they can't figure it out, try some new doctors. Our daughter had some serious digestive problems, and the doctors were clueless. We finally found some doctors in Indianapolis who had experience in this area, and performed tests that other doctors wouldn't have considered. They found the problem and thanks to some medication, my daughter is doing much better.

So if the tests come back negative, and they still don't have a clue... keep pressing them.

Can't you send him back and get another one?

Seriously, at least he's happy. That's worth a lot. I hope things start to look up for him once he gets a little older. Change comes quickly at his age.

I was reading an article the other day which said up 1/3 of all the claimed peanut allergies were bull****. A competing view was that they were real but caused by the fact that so many parents no avoid feeding kids anything with nuts in them thus causing the kids' immune systems to miscalibrate much like having too clean a house or never going outside while young causes other allergies. Either way it's odd that peanut allergies have gone up 300%-400% since the 1960's even controlling for population growth or improved testing.

As someone who has coeliac disease, his symptoms are consistant with uncontrolled coeliac disease. If it is coeliac disease though, at least he is likely to grow out of it in his late teens (unlike me, who is stuck with it for the rest of my life). At least I can have peanuts, I guess.

Thankfully, neither of my kids have shown signs of allergies.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

It sounds more like lactose intolerance than a "milk allergy". The hives from cheese is indicative of an allergy, possibly an allergic response to renin or, more likely, mold. If it is lactose intolerance then it's possible that it may dissappear entirely or it may go through cycles that are dependent on his intestinal health (lactase is produced by epithelial cells in the small intestine, factors/diseases that reduce the health of these cells such as viral infections and food allergies will reduce the amount of lactase being produced which in turn leads to the symptoms of lactose intolerance). A simple solution may be to try giving him a crushed lactase tablet prior to a milk feeding and noting whether there are any improvements.

Japher, I didnt spot your last post until after I posted this one. Sorry to hear about the continued problems. It doesnt change the facts of what I posted but it does seem like more than a 'simple' food allergy at this point. Keep in mind though, that gut health is maintained by extremely complex interactions that are not well understood so the concept that his symptoms may be due to a combinatorial effect is something to keep in mind.

He's been drinking rice and soy milk for the past 3 months and dairy has been taken completely out of his diet. We tried giving him some enzymes to help kick start his gut but to no avail. It is worth mentioning that he has never really handled solid food well. The only time he was normal was when he was still on formula and homemade baby food.

I agree it could still be a food allergy, but he's been tested for all the normal stuff and we were referred to the GI by his allergist. So, we are doing what we are told on top of our own little experiments.

Japh, try the meat broth. I'm very serious about that.

I got extremely ill when I was one from the loss of digestive enzymes. I was on the broth for a good long while, if my mom is correct about 6 months or so.

I can drink milk now, but too much will put me over again.
