  • Lord, liar, lunatic, legend?

It's the sort-of classic bifurcation fallacy about how so many people think that Jesus is God, except it's got four options rather than two so really it's more like a, what, quadfurcation fallacy? Well that's certainly a stupid sounding word, but whatevah. Anyway, the choices are approximately as follows:

Lord: Jesus is Lord, meaning that he's God or an aspect of God or the son of God or however you want to explain the whole trinity business. This option sort of covers the Muslim belief that Jesus wasn't God (or part of God etc.) but was instead a prophet.

Liar: Jesus lied about being divine or at the very least exaggerated his divine-ness.

Lunatic: Jesus honestly believed that he was divine, but really he was just a nutter.

Legend: Jesus's degree of divinity and the extent of his miracles etc. were (intentionally or unintentionally) exaggerated by his followers and/or by later generations.

Note that the first and last options come pre-packaged with explanations about all of the miracles attributed to Jesus, while the middle two do not. Also note that these options aren't necessarily mutually exclusive (e.g. maybe he was both a liar and a legend or, in the case that he was a prophet, then he'd be a lord and lunatic or lord lunatic and legend, etc.). Also included is comedy option number five in case Jesus was actually a space alien or something.

Clearly a legend and Sweet Sauce Jones rolled into one.

You've been reading up on your CS Lewis?

Lord: Jesus is Lord, meaning that he's God or an aspect of God or the son of God or however you want to explain the whole trinity business. This option sort of covers the Muslim belief that Jesus wasn't God (or part of God etc.) but was instead a prophet.
Except for the fact that Christ claimed to be God. He never claimed to be a prophet.

Liar: Jesus lied about being divine or at the very least exaggerated his divine-ness.
Then how do you know he's telling the truth about doing unto others, etc?

Lunatic: Jesus honestly believed that he was divine, but really he was just a nutter.
Then why would you consider him to be a moral teacher? If he's nuts why follow him in anything?

Legend: Jesus's degree of divinity and the extent of his miracles etc. were (intentionally or unintentionally) exaggerated by his followers and/or by later generations.
Problem is that there were living eyewitnesses alive when scripture was written. It takes more time then that to form a legend then the time between Christ's mission and the gospels.

You're deluded if you think I'm going to debate theology with you. Find an acceptable proxy or something.

Why do you think this is proof that it's all true? Might there have been sufficient self interest for motivation to just lie away? On second thought, don't bother answering, since I don't think anyone here really cares about the fantasies you believe in.

Lord, though I admit some fabrications or exaggerations may have been made. But I have no way of knowing as much, and it doesn't much concern me either way, so I just put Lord.

I consider it proof that the gospels were not legendary.

By whom? The authors of the gospels?

They had everything to gain by denying him. By proclaiming him, they accepted crucifixion, suffering and hardship.
