    P. SOLOMON BANDA

FORT CARSON, Colo. — The Associated Press Last updated on Wednesday, Jul. 15, 2009 01:00PM EDT

Heavy combat in Iraq where U.S. soldiers witnessed the deaths of many fellow troops may have contributed to hostile behaviour by Colorado-based veterans who have been accused or convicted in 11 slayings back home, the Army said Wednesday.

The Army launched an investigation after soldiers from the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division were accused in a spate of five killings around Colorado Springs, home to Fort Carson, in 2007 and 2008.

The combat team had nicknamed itself the Lethal Warriors.

Six other slayings involving unit soldiers occurred in Colorado and other states since 2005.

Nationally, at least 121 Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans have committed a killing in the United States or been charged in one.

Army investigators compared the Fort Carson unit of about 3,700 soldiers with a similarly sized unit and found it suffered more combat deaths in Iraq and was deployed there longer.

The task force report released Wednesday said more study is needed on the links between combat and aggressive behaviour. It suggested the Army find a way to identify soldiers who have been exposed to fierce combat.

Investigators focused on the cases of 14 soldiers accused of murder, manslaughter, attempted murder and aggravated assault, mostly with firearms. They found the accused had experienced heavy combat in Iraq and that half of those interviewed reported witnessing war crimes, including the killing of civilians.

Back home, the soldiers carried weapons with them because they felt “naked” and unsafe and had difficulty transitioning to civilian life. Some said they felt “weird” and didn't fit in, the Army report said.

“There, we were the law; here, the cops are the law,” one of the accused told investigators.

The Army report says the accused claimed their commanders and fellow soldiers did not encourage them to seek help at home.

Given that there are about a million Iraq & Afghanistan war vets around and have been for a few years (let's say 2, to be generous to your side of this) this gives a murder commission rate of 6 per 100 000 per annum. Slightly higher than the US average (~5 per 100 000 per annum) but actually fairly low once you include stuff like age and gender (the veterans will be disproportionately male, all will be adults, and most will be under 35).

How is this even a story?

Does that mean we can kill this thread as it is not post worthy?

Return of soldiers that have been in battle isn't something to joke about.

Lots of danish troops has been out there, but it's only latedely that there has been serious thughts about how they return to normal life.

No doubt, they are needed out there, and they should still be sed - though, the return must be improved.

Because it fits the theme that US soldiers are brutal bloodthirsty babykillers.

No offense Ben, but KH isn't any kind of oracle - he can without any problem be an idiot - he occationally proves such, though he will probably deny such.

His post gives the information sorely lacking in the article that soldiers are less likely as a percentage of the population to kill people then civilians of the same age and sex. The article only looks at the gross number of soldiers responsible without this critical commentary necessary to reach the conclusions they draw.

I'm not sure what argument you have against his point other then labelling him an 'idiot' which is not very compelling to me.
