    • As was mentioned, Enterprise was the only survivor from the ships sent to Vulcan. Unless she was on the Enterprise (which I don't remember exactly but I don't believe so, maybe she was), she served her purpose as a quirky comic relief plot device and died.

      • Her purpose was to elicit The Bulge. She had one of the great roles in the film.

            • I was disappointed that Uhura and the green chick didn't get it on while Kirk was watching. Isn't Star Trek supposed to break social mores and the like?

                      • Ah, I see we've gotten around to ripping the plot. Fair enough - the plot was pretty bad. It was, in fact, an action movie.

Then again, for the most part, so was The Wrath of Khan. What "big ideas" were in Khan? The Genesis device? They didn't have to make a decision about its use: Khan used it in an attempt to kill them. Bones has a few lines about the morality of it all, but I wouldn't say the movie exactly grapples with the issue.

Time travel has been used many times in ST, including in movies 4 and 8.

                        Spoiler:
Admittedly, one wonders why Spock Prime didn't simply ram his ship - full of "red matter" into the bad guy's ship, instead of meekly surrendering.

This movie served its purpose: it gets us back to the beginning and sets up more movies. The characters are there, and they are solid, IMO. It was fun. It was not cerebral, and that's ok by me. I do hope the next one has a bit more in the way of mind games between the Enterprise crew & the baddies.

                          I really enjoyed it.

                          • Arrian is correct, Number 2 had none of that social commentary so common in TOS, and it is the concensus best ST movie based on the poster here. Would you have wanted more social questions that made #5 so unpopular?

But I do agree that those were the most important aspects in TOS. But mainly because it was cheaper to produce social commentary vs. big budget special effects. Heck what was it..... every third episode had to take place entirely on the ship because they couldn't affort the extra scenery. Let's not romantisize TOS too much.

                              • The original TOS khan episode was about eugenics. The movie was about revenge and didn't even discuss the eugenics aspects except to refresh peoples memories.
