Good thing Canada only sends half as many as is allowed under the relevant restrictions.

The relevant limit is 7% of total family and employer preferences (summed). The limit for 2008 was 27000. Canada and the UK each sent 15000 or so (and of these, some may have come under non-family/employer preferences; for example, those who "pierce" the family limits are not counted against the per-country limit).

Sigh, I blame fatigue. Was late and I was tired. Should have said 15 is greater unemployment and a lower employment rate.

God, have you ever taken a math course? Without actual numbers, all it means that Texas is losing jobs at a slower rate than Florida (#2).

These aren't rates, these are the gross numbers. That the gross number for Texas is less then Florida, that is significant. Given that Florida is considerably smaller, that would lead me to believe that Texas is in the lower half of the bracket, given the fact that California is a larger proportional share of the total and by far the largest gross contribution to unemployment.

For your assumption to be correct, you would have to assume that the majority states ranking lower then Texas would have to be on the lower side of the bracket, this we know isn't true, given the job losses in CA, FL, NM, AZ and NV.

Anyways, your result is less statistically likely then mine, given the information we already have:

1. CA, FL, NM, AZ and NV all have higher then average unemployment.

2. Texas has a lower gross rate of job losses then Florida, a state that is considerably smaller, 16 million to 24 million.

This means that Texas is 50 percent larger then Florida, and has fewer losses, meaning that unemployment in Texas would be about a third less then the rate in Florida.

CA, TX, FL, AZ, NM, and NV all add up to about 75 million people out of 300 million. That is a quarter of the total population.

The odds of all six being in the lower half of the distribution is far less likely then Texas being in the top half of the distribution. That is all I am saying. Look at it this way. CA, and FL have unemployment around 10 percent or so. That's roughly a sixth of the US. Even if there were full employment everywhere else in the US, the unemployment rated would still be at 2 percent, just CA and FL. The average unemployment rate in the other 43 states would have to be 5.5 percent to make Texas slightly in the negative half of the distribution. Now I don't know about you, but it seems to me the average is likely a point or so higher.

The truth is that Texas is the 14th best state for unemployment, and by far the largest.

I concede the point about LA.

The interesting part is that all 13 of them were blue states.

Keep in mind that Canada's had a really good economy lately. That might be why less Canadians are fleeing universal health care.
