Why do you do it?
This may sound like a vague question, so let me elaborate. I've worked for both Republicans and Democrats at various campaign offices, and if there's one thing in common that both types of politicians have is their mindset.
Both Dems and GOP have a mindset: this is their job. Their ticket to power, prestige, etc. I very much doubt that they honestly believe in what they're saying, because their idealistic days are long gone and they're just doing it because it's literally their job. Same goes for campaign workers. Strangely enough the one thing you'll rarely hear people in campaign offices talk about are politics. They are literally sick of it and don't want to bring that up.
So that explains politicians..
And now we move on the the average person. Most people who are conservative or Republican identify as such for few reasons. One of them would be their income, since Republicans are usually associated with wealth and lower taxes, another is religion, and another reason is simply cultural.
Democrats/liberals on the other hand are different. Aside from demographics like teachers/academia who lean to the left because they are government based, the very vast leftist coalition is composed of disillusioned and unempowered groups. They are mostly #1 poor, #2 disaffected. They have either been discriminated against by society, or feel that way, usually because of (percieved) racism and distrust of the system because of their low wages.
Which makes it kinda hard for me to understand the average liberal. I can understand why celebrities are liberals - they are egomaniacs who think they can change the world and love to hear themselves talk, usually in support of some bull**** cause.
But why the average liberal? The guy who watches MSNBC and Bill Maher, comes posting on forums in support of Obama and just loves the environment so much that they're willing to buy organic food and drive a Prius. Why would they literally support ideas or politicians that would like nothing more to screw you over? For the sake of irony of masochism?
Is there something wrong with these people's heads? Do you honestly think you can change the world? Do you think you can belong, be a part of a movement, to do something that will make the world a better place? Does it give you comfort at night to lay down and say "yep, I'm doing the right thing"?
It just doesn't make sense to me. Maybe I just don't get it. Maybe I'm ignorant. Maybe it's because of the media. Maybe I'm just stupid.
So this is a question for all you liberals, "progressives" (the cool term now!), commies, leftists, socialists, Democrats, etc. . . .
