  • A serious question for liberals/progressives/socialists/leftists

    Why do you do it?

This may sound like a vague question, so let me elaborate. I've worked for both Republicans and Democrats at various campaign offices, and if there's one thing in common that both types of politicians have is their mindset.

Both Dems and GOP have a mindset: this is their job. Their ticket to power, prestige, etc. I very much doubt that they honestly believe in what they're saying, because their idealistic days are long gone and they're just doing it because it's literally their job. Same goes for campaign workers. Strangely enough the one thing you'll rarely hear people in campaign offices talk about are politics. They are literally sick of it and don't want to bring that up.

    So that explains politicians..

And now we move on the the average person. Most people who are conservative or Republican identify as such for few reasons. One of them would be their income, since Republicans are usually associated with wealth and lower taxes, another is religion, and another reason is simply cultural.

Democrats/liberals on the other hand are different. Aside from demographics like teachers/academia who lean to the left because they are government based, the very vast leftist coalition is composed of disillusioned and unempowered groups. They are mostly #1 poor, #2 disaffected. They have either been discriminated against by society, or feel that way, usually because of (percieved) racism and distrust of the system because of their low wages.

Which makes it kinda hard for me to understand the average liberal. I can understand why celebrities are liberals - they are egomaniacs who think they can change the world and love to hear themselves talk, usually in support of some bull**** cause.

But why the average liberal? The guy who watches MSNBC and Bill Maher, comes posting on forums in support of Obama and just loves the environment so much that they're willing to buy organic food and drive a Prius. Why would they literally support ideas or politicians that would like nothing more to screw you over? For the sake of irony of masochism?

Is there something wrong with these people's heads? Do you honestly think you can change the world? Do you think you can belong, be a part of a movement, to do something that will make the world a better place? Does it give you comfort at night to lay down and say "yep, I'm doing the right thing"?

It just doesn't make sense to me. Maybe I just don't get it. Maybe I'm ignorant. Maybe it's because of the media. Maybe I'm just stupid.

So this is a question for all you liberals, "progressives" (the cool term now!), commies, leftists, socialists, Democrats, etc. . . .

    Why do you do it?

Didn't read the post, but here's the answer: Because it's the right thing to do.

Universal health care, for instance. No one person has a right to life more than another. Health care should be available and affordable to everyone.
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "

Okay, so you're trying to save the world?

Your argument doesn't make sense. Look, you say it's the right thing to do but you ignore some simple logical things to consider. Healthcare is often touted by liberals as "the right thing to do" because it improves the welfare of society (and I'm not going to mention how it's failed in so many places), but you do realize that a person would be better off but getting something other than universal healthcare? For example, you'd make a person better off by giving them a house or a car, or even a job, or maybe just FREE MONEY, rather than paying for his hospital bills.

Healthcare just sounds nicer, more user friendly, and a cause that people can rally under and support - unfortunately not quite based in reality.

So essentially it helps you sleep at night?

By the way, "the right thing to do" differs greatly from person to person. Something that you may think is the right thing to do, I may think is the wrong thing to do. So would it find it fine to screw over a person like me because of political beliefs?

If you don't believe people can initiate change, maybe this will make you think.

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” Robert F. Kennedy
And indeed there will be time To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?". t s eliot

That's good that it gives you inspiration, but initiating change requires more than posting on forums, and watching MSNBC, and scoffing at people, which is essentially the sole activities these people engage in.

People with more education tend to lean towards the left. What does that tell you?

Actually, people with college degrees are more Republican, as are people with MBAs, though people with Law degrees and other grad students (academia) are more liberal.

But to your point, you're essentially implying that "smarter people are more liberal!" If what you're saying is true, are you saying you're liberal because you're smart, or that you feel you should be a liberal so people don't think you're stupid?

Either way, yours is quite an elitist though enlightening comment.

Though - people IN college are more liberal.. usually because they have a very naive, optimistic mindset and haven't really worked yet. As well as highly influenced by academia.

Why do you do it, rtwinger? Were you a fan of "Dubya?" He and his buddy Cheny are paragons of rightist ideology (so I can only assume you see him in a favorable light), and one of the reasons you've seen such a resurgence in the left.

You know, he was the guy who basically took ALL the goodwill we had from the world community and p*ssed it down the drain, then took to bullying our longtime allies, damaging decades-old relationships, then got us into a war that had NOTHING to do with Bin Laden (tho it was spun that way, and let's not forget the weapons of mass destruction that haven't been found to date...lies are the norm with this guy!), THEN decided to take us down the path that torture was okay.

There's a right way to do a thing, and there's a wrong way.

Shrub, the poster boy for the christian fundy right, showed us the wrong way, and he showed us in spades, so I'll see your question and raise you one.

                      Why do you do it?

Why do you do it, rtwinger?
Well I can't speak for rt winger, but I can speak for myself.

I've always been a conservative of some way stripe and form. I believe that it's the best way to live if you want to be happy. I believe that individuals, when given a chance, will do the best thing for themselves, and by extension, that society will benefit most when they can make these decisions.

I believe that central planning is always more inefficient, and that hardships and poverty come as a result.

Were you a fan of "Dubya?"
I am a fan of Dubya. I believe he is a good man, who served his country well, and that history will be kinder to him.

You know, he was the guy who basically took ALL the goodwill we had from the world community and p*ssed it down the drain, then took to bullying our longtime allies, damaging decades-old relationships, THEN decided to take us down the path that torture was okay.
Well, I can only speak as an American ally, and I must say that the situation is far more complicated. It wasn't that Bush squandered the goodwill, but that the allies themselves have proved unreliable. I believe Bush has done more to help Canada then any of our recent prime ministers save Diefenbaker. Far from weakening our relationship, he has made it stronger.

                            Simple.

My income level (I don't wanna be taxed).
I don't believe in nationalized healthcare (I like my healthcare).
I am against idealogical causes because most/all of the time they are bull****.
And I don't like people telling me what to do/think, especially pompous celebrities that you liberals seem to adore.

                            And it's my job. I'm a blogger.

                            See,
I don't need to invent reasons, to myself or others, about notions of "right or wrong." And I find it highly arrogant for liberals to behave or think in this way.

And wake up call: People hated the USA before, and will continue to hate us no matter what. Though you'd probably like to blame it all on Bush, his influence is like a drop of rain into an ocean. The sooner you realize this the better you'll understand how the world works. And sorry, Obama isn't going to fix it.
