Ben, I think the proper way to fight abortion is to attack it as a purely legal matter, the same way other rights are addressed, without PETA/Greenpeace style stunts such as this, without trying to turn it into a public referendum on religious belief.
Images are powerful. I don't see what was wrong about what the Civil Rights movement, which I notice you conveniently ignored, making a big issue over lynchings, publicising police brutality, bringing it home to everybody what exactly is at stake.

Is the reason you ignored the Civil Rights movement, because you find the analogy uncomfortable? We are dealing with persons here, Elok, not animals.

That's the real biggie; for the pro-life movement to have any success at all, it needs to become more secular.
Secular in what sense? I was a secularist Elok. All the arguments stand or fall on their scientific merits.

The majority of its adherents need to learn respect for the separation of church and state, stop "debating" by quoting Psalms and shift their viewpoint into the legal arena.
How is this argument anything to do with quoting Psalms? It's entirely secular. Where are the biblical quotes here Elok? If you are saying that the movement should become more secular then GAP is a huge part of it.

EDIT: Kuci and others pretty much covered why disgust is not some sort of valid argument against abortion--I just want to add that anyone who can be convinced abortion is wrong by a vivid picture of a mangled fetus can probably be convinced it's right again by a picture of a botched back-alley abortion. People need to make ethical and legal judgments with their heads, not their stomachs.
So you are saying I'm in favour of a back-alley abortion? That's a terrible argument. Clearly I'm opposed to both.

That's actually a really good point.

Why do we do surgery in the first place?

Not really. I'm not even pro-life but I can still see a HUGE difference between a medical incision or lump of removed tissue and a carcass that closely resembles a human being in shape, once had a beating heart, once had a nervous system capable of transmitting and processing pain signals (if past ~20 or so weeks), could have potentially developed into a fascinating person if not cut short, etc. etc. etc. In fact I couldn't find the former disgusting at all, ever.

Clearly you've never seen a botched circumcision.

Ben is right. I'm ordering a bunch of t-shirts with images of botched circumcisions on the front, and the decomposing corpse of Matthew Shepherd on the back while he was still tied to the fencepost. And I'll be damned if you stop me from wearing it.

Why don't we cut off your balls and then ponder the question for a while?

Disclaimer: This is assuming the balls could be located.

Ben, your attempt at the Socratic method is as blatant as it is disingenuous.

                            And obviously succeeding.

I'm curious as to how you answer this question as to the purpose of surgery.

It amuses me that you decline to answer the question.

Only the botches ones are vomit-worthy.

The regular ones are still hideous, but they're hideous in the same respect that most Americans are -- not vomit worthy, but holy ****, WHY?
