Well, can you show me any other club that puts mutilated human bodies on its signs? This is just ridiculous. You're using the same stupid arguments over and over again. When people point out that one argument is invalid, you change tacks to another. When they say that's invalid too, you change to another, and another, until you eventually come back to the first one without ever actually answering a single charge. And you wonder why people lose patience arguing with you?

Asher, as rock lyrics go AYAS ain't all that explicit. "Promise me she's not your world?" As compared to, on that same album, "But she's touching his--chest [should be a word that rhymes with sick] now, he takes off her dress, now, let me go." And even that's tame. People who get outraged by music lyrics are all busy whining about the latest rap hit, "I ****ed tha ***** up her big ghetto ass cuz I a nasty nigga who don't use no propa English and perpetuates stereotypes like a mutha****a."

    • That's true, I guess I interpreted explicit as meaning "obvious meaning" rather than "offensive".

[action=Asher]grabs the thread and repositions it as an underground rock lyrics thread. Ben is too stupid to live and too stupid for me to argue with right now. [/action]

      Are these lyrics explicit?

Ms. jones taught me english, but I think I just shot her son
Cause he owed me money, with a bullet in the chest you cannot run
Now hes bleeding in a vacant lot
The one in the summer where we used to smoke pot
I guess I didnt mean it
But man you shoulda seen it
      His flesh explode

      Slow motion
      See me let go
      We tend to die young
      Slow motion
      See me let go
      What a brother knows
      Slow motion
      See me let go

Now the cops will get me
But girl, if you would let me
      Ill take your pants off
I gotta a little bit of blow
      We could both get off
      Later bathing in the afterglow
Two lines of coke Id cut with draino
And her nose starts to bleed
      A most beautiful ruby red

      Slow motion
      See me let go
      Well remember these days
      Slow motion
      See me let go
      Urban life decays
      Slow motion
      See me let go

      And at home
My sisters eating paint chips again
      Maybe thats why shes insane
I shut the door to her moaning
And I shoot smack in my vains
      And wouldnt you
See my neighbors beating his wife
      Because he hates his life
Theres an arc to his fist as he swings
Oh man, what a beautiful thing

And death slides close to me
      Wont grow old to be
      A junkie whine-o creep

      Hollywood glamourized my wrath
Im the young urban psyco path
I encite murder for your entertainment
      Cause I needed the money
      Whats your excuse?
      The jokes on you

      Slow motion
      See me let go (aaahh)
      Oh yeah
      Slow motion
      See me let go (aaahh)
      Ahhhh
      Slow motion
      See me let go (aaahh)
      Oooh

        • Actually, it doesn't look like this thread's going to break new ground (though it has made me muse on the failings of the Pro-Life movement), so let's just make it a lyrics thread. I've long thought that modern "musicians" are fighting a losing battle to make their lyrics more and more offensive, with diminishing returns. You can only swear or talk explicitly so much before the audience becomes desensitized, or the attempt at offensiveness becomes funny. See the Bloodhound Gang's "Put your head up high (and blow your brains out)." Well, no, that one's supposed to be funny, but you see what I mean.

And really, explicit is overrated. A little subtlety and imagination can make a song far more vulgar than a lot of F-bombs or graphic descriptions of penetrative acts. Think of Brown Sugar. That song is, what, thirty or forty years old now? And it's unbelievably crude, talking about kinky interracial sex in the antebellum south without ever resorting to profanity. The most vile song I personally ever heard was from the thirties or so, a little jazz/blues ditty called "Shave 'em dry" that lovingly compares a man's crab-infested genitals to the parts of a church. Plenty of swears, but they're plainly not put in just to offend; it's how the writer of the song is accustomed to talking. Modern vulgarity is a bland, manufactured phenomenon that's starting to wear itself out. Exhibit B: Marilyn Manson.

Ha! We reached the same conclusion simultaneously and separately!

Holocaust memorials do so all the time. UBC had some with the folks at Tienaman Square to highlight the brutality of China. Same with the Palestinians and their demonstrations. The communists and their imperialism demonstrations.

Graphic images are rather common among protests.

Pride Parades are very graphic too.

And you wonder why people lose patience arguing with you?
Labelling an argument as invalid is different from saying why.

            • And I believe Asher has told you, over multiple pages, that all those groups either display their images in a much more private area or got banned from campus just like these bonzos.

Anyway, the song I was thinking of turns out to have been recorded by somebody named Lucille Bogan in 1935. There are two versions of "Shave 'em Dry," it seems; the second, which I was thinking of, effectively ended the woman's recording career, it was so vile. I'm not going to post the lyrics here since Ming might put out a hit on my life. But a recording is available on YouTube. Now THAT was explicit.

              • Are these lyrics appropriate?
Lyrics of Anti Nowhere League - (We Will Not) Remeber You :

                And he's a f***ed-up man with a f***ed up life
Two dirty kids and an ugly wife
                Standard clothes and standard car
                Acceptable that's what you are
The only time he's having fun
Is when he's up his neighbour's bum
Kids himself that he's a man
                Never happy with the plan
Moans about how he's got no class
Because his head's right up his arse
But we don't like the things you do
And we will not remember you
                Remember you

He tells his kids not to be bad
To grow up like their normal dad
Sneaks off down the porno shop
To buy his books and rubber c**k
Hide behind the mask of grins
                Covers all his f***ing sins
But we don't like the things you do
And we will not remember you
                Remember you

You're praying to your god above
To repay all your f***ing love
But you're the meanest c**t in town
The road in you is f***ing down
So don't expect respect from us
You f***ed your life up, can't you suss
And we don't like the things you do
And we will not remember you
                Remember you

And we don't like the things you do
And we will not remember you

Kipper deadpanned a good joke about this in the media scrum the other day:

The other night, after a Flames win over Buffalo, a Calgary PR official informed Miikka Kiprusoff that a scoring change had resulted in the the netminder being credited with an assist.

"That's good," Kiprsuff replied with his customary dryness. "Now I'm the top-scoring European on the team."

Kiprusoff, of course, is currently the only Flames player hailing from the other side of the Atlantic.
