Why not? They could trot out House members with insipid "Think of the children!" stories and still pass a program that does what they wish yet doesn't rely on a revenue stream who's sole reason for existing is to eliminate itself or contain any of the other flaws listed in DaShi's article.

Yes that's usually the case. Which will make it interesting to see what happens now. The Dems have almost complete control. I hope they make good decisions.

If the pattern holds, they'll divide into factions and go to work on one another as the Republicans look on, grinning.

Republicans were responsible for the passing of SCHIP.

Say goodbye to those congressmen next time.

I thought anyone in favor of Congressional power (to balance Presidential power) was against the line item veto.
More checks and balances are always a good thing. It's a line item VETO, not a line item approval. All it means is that omnibus bills get squashed.

In other words, whoever doesn't hold the Presidency...
I think Obama having a line item veto is awesome Suck on that Pelosi!

It's our only hope. but yes, it wouldn't be unexpected.

How would having a national health service like we Brits change America? How much do you pay for health insurance every year, and how much would your taxes have to increase to implement it nationwide?

Republicans and Democrats just want power. That is what is a major part of what is wrong with them.

                        MM = Michael Moore?

If so... wow, that's so wrong it's funny.

                          1. It would make us dirty commies.
                          2. I personally pay ~$110/month through work for health alone (non-dental, non-eyecare), plus copays ($18 per regular visit, $28 per specialist visit and some more for an emergency room visit). Dental is pretty cheap compared, but I can't remember offhand what it is. I could look it up but I'm on my way out the door. I don't use our vision plan, because it sucks. Instead I utilize a tax-free healthcare flexible spending account (it works for paying copays and uncovered things - the dental plan doesn't cover everything) instead. Anyway, it varies quite a bit.
                          3. I don't know, and I don't really trust either party or any interest group if they present a number. But I figure it should be possible to do it and actually save money, considering that we currently spend more per capita on healthcare than the rest of Teh West and yet get lesser care (largely, I suspect, b/c a good chunk of our population gets little to no care at all).

I don't actually expect MY healthcare to improve. It's the guys & gals who currently get diddly squat who would do better. I'm up for it. I think it will have a good ripple effect. Consider it the liberal version of "trickle down."

                            Yes, MM is Michael Moore.

I saw his documentary, I never knew Canada was so clean and polished with such happy people.

So were you being facetious or what? Because Moore has certainly been to Canada. A lot, actually.

Yes, Capt. Obvious. That's the reason why this is a monumentally stupid way to fund a program like this using that revenue stream. I'm not suprised its a democrat idea.
