Of course, this is one of the perils of Democracy, as I'm sure part of the calculation may be that if Pakistan doesn't "defend the Muslims" they can get fundy parties to make gains in Parliament.
Paks can't do **** to India.

    • That's true. The one country more pathetic militarily than India is Pakistan.

The issue at hand is the relation of religion to everyday life. You argue that Judaism has become a very spiritual religion, and that Islam has far more expansonistic aims. Given that Judaism doesn't aim to be a universal faith, of course Islam is more expansionistic. At the same time, the issue here is that as much as you say that Judaism is now spiritual, it is impossible to be an observant Jew without constantly following every day rituals in the way you live an interact with others here and now. Judaism is a community faith as much as an individual one. In that way it is very different from Christianity, and like Islam.

If Judaism grew up out of power, it still remembered being in power, in having kings and temples. That part of Judaism hasn't gone away, even if reality made it irrelevant. Christianity never had that.

Are you ****ing kidding me? It's a city of 18 million people. There are 20 *******s with guns holed up in 5 locations. WTF?
It was only 10 a******s, but for each location it would be routine to deploy an entire SWAT team, each team having something nearly equal to a platoon of soldiers. I doubt that there's any city in the world able to field that many urban assault specialists at a moment's notice, with the possilbe exception of Beijing and Moscow. Most countries don't station their army units in ther cities. It's expensive and just a bad idea in general.

India's Home Minister has resigned, but it seems to me that if the terrorists came from Pakistan there was little he could have done. The failure really lies with India's foreign intelligence agencies and Pakistan's internal intelligence agencies.

The ESU of the NYPD fields over 400 men.

                So don't be ridiculous.

                • I'm not surprised that this sort of specialized force is not as common in different places.

                  • I mean the Indians probably also have less aircraft carriers, less electrification, lower literacy, and just poorer people. Maybe SWAT is a luxury.

                      • I wonder if we will end up going into Pakistan? Not right away, but if events might take us that way?

I took a look (unscientific) at some defense stocks and they seemed to jump with the attacks.

A luxury Bombay should be able to afford, given its size and the wealth it's attained.

                          • Seriously, there are 180+ people dead, including a few dozen Westerners. What is the cost of these attacks to Bombay going to be after all is said and done? How much would it have cost to have an effective tactical response on standby?

                            • Not to mention the fact that most of the cost of tac teams is personnel and this will be lower in India than in the West.

                              • Well, you ought to get Grace Hopper about it and think by extension. What other third world regions have uindersized SWAT teams? What other things do they have less of than they should?

SWAT tends to hire a lot of people from SOCOM type communities. Sort of like airlines with pilots. And pays rather well. Not sure how much of a recruiting pool INdia has to draw from. Of course this doesn't make it impossible. Just sharing a factor for you.
