I think part of it is I don't understand the need for PDA. When you are walking in public, why must people hold hands with their loved ones? Is it a way to show off to the public? I don't get it, it seems frivolous to me. And in the case of gay PDA, there's no benefit and tons of complications.

      • Public affection is an entirely individual's preferences. I do not think any less of couples who show no public affection.

It really just depends on what you personally feel comfortable with. With me, I feel that I should be able to be as open as straight people but unfortunately sometimes the practicality of safety and preserving life stops me from doing so.

Is that what it's about for you? Because straight people do it you should be able to as well?

TBH I always found it to be a sign of insecurity. People hold hands because they want others to know their partner is taken, so no one else will take him/her from you. That's my armchair psychology diagnosis anyway.

          • That is not my only reason. It's also for the same reason straight couples show public affection - to show my love for my partner. But given the current civil rights issue, this also means that such behavior - by any gay couple - wittingly or unwittingly, is a political statement as well.

                I hate holding hands.

                • I often link arms with my wife. Only very rarely hold hands.

There was one kid -- a flamboyant kid -- who everyone "knew" was gay while he denied it, and he was beat up several times and regularly had his locker vandalized... Since then, I know of at least a dozen kids who've come out since high school.
