Is that how you feel about animal cruelty? How much of a feminist could you be if you aren't against animal cruelty?
But, stupid talk radio allegations such as yours deserve a standard talk radio response.
Che said this would treat women like cattle and you said PETA has done that in the past with their ads. That's a support of Che's statement. You're being stupid.
As far as showing the human body, no, it's not. It's the pattern from PETA and their methods that I dislike--which I do view as sexist.
By showing the human body? You mean that pattern?

Just because Gloria Steinem sees parallels and equates them doesn't mean I do.

I mean, silly me. I think we should focus on things that still need solving first, like actually accomplishing some of the goals feminism had set out to do.

That's a far cry from saying that we believe PETA wants to put women into dairy farms. But hey, I guess nuance isn't your strong suit?

No, PETA's pattern of equating women--human women--to animals.

See feminism just might be about women to you, but to people like Steinem it's about social justice.

You realize that "dairy farm" is being used as a metaphor by everyone don't you?

No, PETA's pattern of equating women--human women--to animals.
They don't just equate women with animals. They do that to men too. You've got to be Elok.

The sanest posts in this thread have been by Elok.

            Which is fine.

I'll admit, flat out, I'm speciesist. Humans before animals; once we have social justice for humans better resolved, we can look at other species.

You didn't seem to be, what with the allegation that I thought PETA supported enslaving women, putting them into cages, and milking them.

They don't just equate women with animals. They do that to men too.
I suppose they do. That doesn't mean that their methods are any less sexist.

            You've got to be Elok.
Well, then, he's been using me as a DL for four years before he signed on. Clever bastard.

If feminism isn't about women, one wonders what the root word "femin-" is doing in there...

It seems to have escaped your notice, but I really don't give a flying crap if PETA's women choose to act like hoochies for the baby seals. I'm barely even aware of the campaigns. My objection is to crazy-ass people who'd make it illegal to eat anything not made out of soy if they had the power. And, in this thread specifically, to their deranged and dysfunctional strategies towards that end.

If you don't oppose cruelty to animals how can you expect anyone to oppose unfair treatment to you? The same mentality that causes animals to suffer causes all oppressed people to suffer. It's the exact thing that feminists oppose.

WTF?! How are they sexist then?

Feminist is a way of thinking. As in thinking like a women, specifically not like a man typically does, that is thinking that he is the only one with a valid point of view because he's more powerfull.

... Cause he believes in humans before animals and he's a human, not a cuddly teddy bear as his avatar shows... just as I don't think you are a lizard because your avatar shows it.

And who was talking about cruelty to animals? Unless you think dairy farms are cruelty... which the ASPCA may disagree with you with.

                        Okay.

                        So.

                          Why not?

Because I favor humans over animals? You haven't even inquired as to my rationale behind that; do you assume that I favor humans because of some power disparity? If that's the case, that's the second time you've proven the aphorism about assumptions in this thread alone.

Or is it because I don't hew to Gloria Steinem's line of thought, evidenced in that one tract you selected?

I mean, it's not like feminism is a monolithic school of thought, no more than conservatism or liberalism are. There are those people I disparaged earlier who believe themselves to be feminists. I disagree and feel that they are in error, but that's what they think.

In the same way topless laws are in most places around the country.

Men can remove their shirt, no problem. Women cannot. It is sexism.

In the same way (albeit reversed) that PETA's ad campaign appropriates women's sexuality to garner prurient attention, generally from males, to somehow convince them to do... something.

Because feminism is about equality. You are judging humans to be superior to other animals.
