You know that if a Democrat were in the White House this delay wouldn't even be considered.

I'm glad the gap is widening, I was worried that we might be headed towards a new Cold War.

How much do you want to bet he wants to delay this one, to delay the Veep debate, because Palin is much more retarded than they anticipated and needs more time?

So perhaps McCain is needed back in Washington, according to Harry Reid at least.

He needed McCain's final vote on the legislation. No way that the Dems are going to open themselves up to association with Bush and a corporate bailout if McCain's not coming along for the ride. Not for anything else.

But it can easily be taken (or, if you prefer, spun) the other way.

The "other way" is totally ludicrous on it's face. McCain hasn't cast a single vote in the Senate since April. But his presence now is suddenly absolutely imperative. Right

McCain holds the key to such a bipartisan vote, according to Reid, because Republicans are likely to defer to his position on a bill that holds political peril.

As I said, it's McCain's vote that he needs. Not anything else. McCain should be ashamed about pulling this crap.

And you are being extremely short sided if you can't see how the McCain side can use his statements ("Republicans are likely to defer to his position") to say that he need to be there because he doesn't agree with the bill as presented and wants changes.

We know he'll spin it. Why are you arguing this?

And he'll have to explain why he only came up with this wonderful idea two days before the debate, or why he's convinced that Friday's the last chance to make any changes. He can argue whatever nonsense he pleases to. But he should still be ashamed about this.

Both can be handled with a small bit of finagling. First, McCain had to go through the Paulson plan and also the Congress seemed to not like the plan as presented and wanted some changes made to the bill. Second, he never said Friday is the last chance, but said he wants to get it done as soon as possible.... which would mean working all the way through.

Is it a Hail Mary pass? Sure... but he needs a few.

Why's he campaigning tomorrow (at the Clinton Global Initiative), if every moment counts?

I'm not sure many people would call speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative "campaigning", especially as its being hosted by President Bill Clinton, who I hope, everyone realizes is no Republican.

I don't even know why US bothers with polls... we all know they are useless (in US) and that the Republicans are winning anyway...
