Oh, undoubtedly that part is spin. But so is the "McCain prevented this bill from passing" crap. The House Republicans didn't really like this bill since the beginning (rumblings where there since it was announced)

I know that and you know that. I'm just trying to see if I can get him to admit it.

It's my understanding that they plan to purchase the securities at book value. That's a gift.

            • Then define what you mean by enough support from House Rs

Sufficient support that there's a deal. Which there were indications of early in Thursday. The revolt happened later.

If you were following the news early in the day, everyone was talking about an imminent deal. Then it fell through.

He's trying to push his spin that McCain's coming to Washington deep sixed this deal without any proof at all.

I, never said anything about him single-handedly deep-sixing the deal.

I said that his role was counterproductive. Which it was. Boehner's aide admitted as much, if you remove the blatant spin (which you apparently just admitted was spin) from his statement.

                • No, it's not. I repeated exactly what Smith said, minus the conspiratorial spin.

So why did they "go along" until then? They had all of Wednesday to scuttle the ongoing process. They could have made their stand prior to BUsh's meeting with the two candidates. They didn't.

                    • I'd parse this quote if it were longer than a single sentence:

The aide, Kevin Smith, said Republicans revolted, in part, because they were chafing at what they saw as an attempt by Democrats to jam through an agreement on the bailout early Thursday and deny McCain an opportunity to participate in the agreement.

Minus the conspiratorial spin, Smith explicitly said that McCain is part of the reason why the deal fell through.

                      • It could be said that the Dems were more concerned about playing politics then about the quality of the bill.

By whom? Not Senate Republicans, who were going along, nor Bush, who wanted this done yesterday...

But I guess Bush still hates McCain, and his fellow Republican Senators must too, having been going along with this Anti-McCain timeline....

Except of course that McCain is the one that inserted himself by claiming that this crisis was so terrible he had to suspecnd his campaign, and then took almost a full day to travel from NY to DC, a trip he could have made in four hours, and have been there on Wednesday instead.

Guess what, most of the rank and file WERE rumbling about it, from Monday onward. If you read the articles about it you always had a quote from a House Republican who was unsettled (Cantor especially), who usually referred to it as socialism.

Boehner wasn't one of them, and felt he could win them to his side, but he couldn't.

Minus ANY spin, Smith was saying the House Republicans were unsettled at the "deal" and were feeling pushed into it without their concerns about the biggest bailout in US history (such as the government being this entangled in private business) being addressed.

Yes, I realize you want your spin to win... but its quite obviously spin.
