      A lot better.

But we kept universal health care and you can take it out of our cold dead hands!

I'm not against progress. I'm against mindless economic growth that is only designed to strengthen the nation, but in fact lowers living standards and destroys the earth.

So am I. That's why like most Euros I'm in favor of high taxes and strict environmental regulations.

Face it the only way to convince people they don't need ubereconomic growth is when they already have a good standard of living. And I don't know if you have noticed but Western Europe has very low growth and it has in the past two decades consistently invested more and more in green tech.

If our current system fails, we'll just switch back to the no welfare, low tax, planet plundering capitalism we had in the late 19th century.

In a command economy it's as simple as growing more food and building more houses etc...

You need a labor force to do that.

Well, I give up then. You just can't understand how population growth is bad for living standards.

Well braniac. When do you project the labor force to reach zero? When is that suppose to happen exactly.

The solution for Europe and Japan is much simpler than new taxes:

                      IMMIGRATION.

That is why the US continues to grow as it does. Let people from the third world move to Europe and once there they would have more kids, and the populations of European states grow, while at the same time not increasing the overall human population.

Yes I do. Why would I then have argued in another thread that we should help the developing world by starting a large project distributing contraceptives to curb population growth and slow the AIDS pandemic? Why have I argued that educating women in the third world is the best course of action?

I'm not advocating growth, I'm advocating avoiding collapse societal collapse to show that emancipated women may not be the baby factories that women in traditional societies are but that they can make enough of them to keep the society stable.

And of course, the key is to do it with immigration of the smartest (or richest, which implies some degree of smart somewhere, right?? ). You don't let the unwashed masses in, you let the well groomed masses in. That way you improve your country and screw over the other countries in the process.

                          Right?

The smartest from the third world already get to emmigrate. No, if Heraclitus wants is more babies, you let in the poor yearning to be better off. They are the baby makers.
