It's pretty damn consequential... LEDs won't replace the common incandescent light bulb until we can figure out how to create an omnidirectional source, cheaply.

Omni-directional LED lamps are disclosed in three embodiments. In a first embodiment, two LEDs are mounted side by side in a miniature bayonet base that can fit into a conventional miniature bayonet s

Obviously designs exist. It really isn't hard to do; I could get a bulb shaped thing and basically stick a bunch of LEDs to its surface... But since I can't buy LED sources for my lamps at a grocery store, I'd assume that they're relatively pricey.

They are. The ones I've seen are $20+ a bulb.

          But as production ramps up...

Maybe you don't, but how about those people out there who aren't inflating the tires to the proper level? Do we want them to continue in their ignorance, instead of prosetylizing proper auto care and efficiency tips?

Knowing how fragile CFLs can be, I highly doubt anyone would want to be using one for such purposes.

I've replaced my most-used lights with CFLs: in reading lamps and in the TV room. Any changes in lighting is negligible. They use so much less electricity, they pay for themselves, something incandecent bulbs don't do.

CFL's do contain mercury. When they finally do start to burn out, I'll just e-recycle them, like I already do with batteries, broken CD players and old computer components.

The guy simply doesn't have one worth the name. It consists of give oil companies more subsidies, give oil companies more leases, subsidize electric utilities which donated to his campaign but none who didn't.
At least he's willing to employ all alternatives, including nuclear, and not just the ones approved by the Sierra club, who I believe is a big Obama supporter. Why do you think Obama is so opposed to nuclear?

I must say a long term plan to increase the domestic supply of oil is a great idea of McCain, and drilling everywere is an excellent plan. Oil prices are dropping as supply increases, and dropping much faster then the 3-4 percent that Obama said could be done. The reason? Speculators figure that with the supply increasing, the price is going to drop, so they are selling now when they think oil is high.

That's not a policy that's stupid politics. A real policy would include not just subsidies but also requirements that efficiency get pushed up especially CAFE standards.
Cafe standards are horrible, expensive and not worth the cost of compliance. Emissions aren't really an issue anymore these days.

Under ideal conditions. The cold eats them for breakfast and you cannot use them for outdoor lighting. Why are we banning Incandescents when CFLs can't get it done?

They give me severe headaches, especially when I try to use them when I am working on a computer.

If you break a CFL you have to have masks on. Think about that. If mercury breaks indoors, you have to remove all of it, and you pretty much have to call in someone who can deal with hazardous waste.

Well, it's not that he's completely opposed to it. He's just of the mindset we need a better method to eliminate the waste before we build more. He's given himself some wiggle room.

There's no guarantee that the supply will increase dramatically enough to do so. Additionally, since it'll be years before it comes to fruition, I'm not so sure the speculators will drop the prices soon enough to make a difference this year.

Well, a lot of environmentalists are now more in favor of it.
