  • Not Watching the Beijing Olympics

For several reasons, I'm not going to allow a television in my home to be on any channel covering the 2008 Summer Olympics. The best thing to come out of these Olympics is for every company involved to loose ****loads of money. Just the latest in the saga of the Chinese government's superiority complex, and the world's willingness in order to turn a buck.

"What did you learn in school today, dear little boy of mine?
I learned our government must be strong. It's always right and never wrong,.....that's what I learned in school."
    --- Tom Paxton song ('63)

    That's nice.

I'll be watching as much of the Olympics as I can

I won't be watching any of the Olympics because I never have and don't see a reason to start now.

Well, no - I might watch some tennis.

I'm tempted to for the tennis as well. Although I happen to be a Fed fan.

        But it's Beijing.

        Summer olympics.

Summer olympics in the free world.

        Summer olympics in Beijing.

I wonder if this will backfire on Beijing in the coverage they receive from the western media. It seems that they are creating a story where there doesn't need to be one. Surely they realize how easy it will be to insert current "prohibited" information in a story once the western editors get ahold of it anyway.

I will watch some and especially those least contaminated by drugs issues. I mean I thought equestrian events were immune, but last Olympics a horse had been got at, thru curing a horse cold or something, with a medication OKed in some countries but banned in others. It turned out the medication formula varied per country, so it seemed.

Hmmm, maybe not a good example.

But I will probably watch the swimming and diving events. and decathlon and ..............

The Olympics. A non-event for me.

On top of that the IOC are sellouts (as described in the OP). Who needs 10 000 different Olympic disciplines anyway. It's all a bit too over the top for me. Ah how I long for a good round of ancient Olympics!

My interest in these olympics will be about the same as the last. I will watch a few events that interest me, if I remember they are on. Otherwise, I won't be watching most of it because I HATE American coverage of the Olympics - its jingoistic and sappy at the same time.

I would much rather watch the Olympics in a country that didn't have much stake in the games, that way they cover the actual sports, not "OUR VALIANT ATHLETES!!!".

Well I would have thought you could watch the games from other tv providers quite easily.

Doesn't Eurosport broadcast in the US? Or is that only in hotels...

Try to catch a CBC feed if you can. They'll be showing the events live, unlike NBC, and always do a way, way, WAY better job anyway.

Since I really don't care about most all the sports in the Olympics what very little interest I have in the games is jingoistic support for our valiant athletes.
