Obama claims proud family history of service in the Soviet Army
Herc - That is a false choice. Why does it have to be one or the other? I certainly can't choose a system that excludes millions in theory whereas a system that excludes in practice is not to be admired either.

Neither.
That's where the debate always breaks down. It isn't a choice between completely socialized and completely privatized.
It's also a myth that we all have the same healthcare.
No premier or PM or cabinet minister I have ever heard of has ever waited 6 months for a needed proceedure, while those who have significant wealth go the the US for any urgent care.

If competition for workers is an issue, why are private schools not only allowed, but at least partially paid for with government dollars?

I'm not claiming it is a real choice.
I'm just trying to figure what people on the other side of the pond think of the American system.
Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

Education /= health care
You can train a teacher much quicker and cheaper than a GP (much less a specialist). Classrooms are cheaper than hospitals, etc.
I'm not saying this is a reason not to reform our system but to barge ahead blindly thinking this is not an issue would be naive imho.

It would be better if everyone had a better level of assured care that wouldn't bankrupt them in unfortunate circumstances, but it isn't the boogyman that many have been 'educated' to believe.

It's not an issue that stops France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Belguim, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Austrailia, Finland, New Zealand, Spain, Singapore, Ireland, Israel, etc, etc, etc... from having public and private healthcare systems.
In fact, the now more commonly cited factoid is that only 2 other countries on Earth prohibit private healthcare on a level or greater than Canada does. Cuba and North Korea. Good company there.
Nobody has to blindly charge anywhere. In fact, if we were willing to open our eyes and go beyond 'Yankee bad' there could be a lot of benefits for all Canadians.

Private healthcare in New Zealand used to be pretty small. It was a good deal for some people (my parents had additional insurance and they were working class). But it only worked for everyone as long as the state system picked up most of the slack. Private health insurance was for people who didn't want to wait as long for treatment.
But when our moron right wing government started making cuts to the public system, it ****ed it up for everyone. Premiums soared and neither the state system nor the private system was a good deal for anyone.
Add to that the fact that anyone who is trying to introduce private healthcare to Canada is inevitably an ******* who's trying to undermine the state system, and it's no wonder Canadians are suspicious.

Kid is right on this one. That doesn't make any sense... especially since Hillary and McCain are also far to the left of Floyd and far to the right of Che.
Of course they are. I wasn't talking about them, though.
Spencer,
So lying (or spinning, or aggrandizing) our way into a stupid war is a-ok, but swapping names of concentration camps whilst pandering to Jewish voters is a terrible sin. Hell, even Hillary's absurd sniper fire comment didn't actually get people killed and waste hundreds of billions of dollars.
I am mildly disappointed in Obama for this oops (or whatever you wanna call it).
I respect that McCain "did ****" before he became a politician. I really do. That doesn't make him the better candidate for President, though.
Yeah, Harper isn't the one to make changes. He isn't trusted.

If you are going to pander to vets with a story to try and improve your cred with them by telling an important family story, wouldn't you at least try and get the facts right. This would seem to be especially true in light of the snipergate fiasco of the Hillary camp. The sad part is that this isn't even the first time he's claimed an uncle in the Soviet army. I thought you wanted to get away from a president who didn't know either history or geography.

I thought you'd be happy that a US candiate was claiming a family history in the Soviet army.
